Yes. This ends up being a good compromise in both height positions. The screen mostly stays in the low position, now we're into the 80's and 90's (F) on a regular basis. If I want even more cooling air I just flatten the spoiler angle. I have a California Scientific XL, aka "The Barn Door", that is very quiet. I use the same HL earplugs as well. I might add, I have a third screen that came with the bike - a Wunderlich touring screen. It also benefits from the spoiler. I used the permanent mount on the shorty and the clamp on hardware on the Wunderlich. As has been said before, the audible character of the air hitting your helmet and the condition of your hearing make this very subjective.

I´m also 6´1 . How was the stock on the high setting?

My bike never had the stock screen, so I can't speak to that.

For me the advice of Boxer Boy 55 has worked. I ordered and fitted the small Power Bronze screen with good results. First thing I noticed was the wind hit me in the torso rather than the shoulders with the secondary effect of less turbulence around helmet and a lot less noise. I tested with no earplugs fitted and could tell as soon as speed of around 50mph reached there was a noise reduction and was able to maintain 80 mph with no deafening wind roar so a great result for me.
The next improvement was the stability of the bike during the test I encountered very strong winds that are brining in a storm yet the buffeting I've experienced in these conditions did not arise perhaps due to a more controlled stream of air hitting the torso rather than a turbulent air stream at shoulder and neck height that can cause upper body to buffet and transmit this in to the steering.

A very subjective subject due to differing personal requirements we all have and expect, for example my mate rides 1200RS and has fitted the tall screen but when I ride the bike it feels more like diving a car and you end up with a slightly distorted view of the world through Perspex but he's one happy fella so a case of experimenting until your particular compromise is reached and this report is intended as just that a report of what to expect if you think you could be tempted to try going the opposite way to the majority.

Finally a consideration for the pillion if you fit tall screen the air could buffet in the void between you making them uncomfortable I have experienced this years back on my original R100RS that came fitted with a taller screen and the cure was to fit the original, last thing I want is my other half not enjoy the trip and subject my ears to another type of bashing!
Finally must say what a great forum with good advice provided by enthusiasts of the pass time and a far cry from others I've browsed that seem to attract endless bad mouthed guys keen to out shout each other with worthless opinions. Came from a 2008 RT to the 1250RS, and also notice the wind noise, but noticed it was more bearable at the lower setting, going to look and see, which setting the screws are in and if it will go any lower, as that may improve things further, before I look at other alternatives

Yep that´s basically how my B.king was...hitting me in the chest. My helmet noise was a lot less than with this standard screen too. The downside to that was a lot of hardwork on motorway rides and higher speeds , plus if it´s cold you lose body temp very quickly .

I have an R100RS and with that I experience very limited wind noise and great weather protection overall. Last week I focussed on how that low screen (original) deflects the wind and my conclusion was that it’s onto my chest / shoulders, meaning my helmet is fully exposed and yet the set-up is quieter than on the R1200RS. My conclusion is that Boxerboy 55 has been right all along, lower screens are quieter - unless you want to go all they way up to viewing through Perspex.

I ended up commuting to work earlier this week with the screen completely removed. (For the curious, I’ve been thinking about making a navigator mount to go somewhere above the clocks and had the screen off over the weekend to look at options) Anyway long story short, it was quite a pleasant journey from a wind noise perspective, so am considering a shorter than stock screen. For background, I’m 6ft 2, and usually ride with screen on the high position on the high holes.
Also, worth mentioning I came from a Honda Africa Twin, that was truly horrific from a wind noise POV, RS is great in comparison.

And before anyone gets in there first I probably have bought the wrong bike and should have gone for the R 🤣

Thanks Ray, yes I’ve been reading a few of the posts about nav mounts there looks to be some good options. But on the other hand, I do have quite a well equipped ‘man cave’( lathe, mill, small CNC machine) so I like to spend my time there making bits and bobs.

I look forward to your design thoughts. Your man cave sounds like a fully fledged machine shop.

the helmet might be at fault. So I have put blue tape around the lens to seal it off
from moving air.

no- it is general turbulence- a howl.... noisy

the helmet has a stretchy fabric-like thing that closes down
the opening...

Do you believe the chin area/chin skirt is the only difference between
a loud and a quiet helmet?
