RE: R1250RS in the USA soon! - 3

And you know I looked over a 1250 TFT yesterday. Yes, its funky with the connectivity but there is only one 'view' and there is less information on that one screen than on the 1200 display. You need to go through menus via the wonder wheel to access most information .

it does not have the lean angle view of the 1250R or S1000RR - which can only be software . So, we have the 1250RS, listed as a 'sport' bike on the website , that has no 'sport' version or 'sport' software within the TFT and a 1250R which is a 'road' bike but does have an M sport version and does have extra sporty displays in its TFT....

I remain convinced that some people in BMW's design and marketing dept smoke funny cigarettes ...

So I took a test ride on a 1250RS yesterday, and bought the one I tested. It's a blue one. The blue is very dark and looks almost black except where the sunlight reflects off of it.

The engine does have less vibration, even less that my well-broken-in 2016 RS with nearly 30,000 miles. It also acellerates more rapidly. I never thought I needed more power or less vibration than my 2016 RS, but still it's a nice improvement.

My ride wasn't very long, but my impression was that the shift assist is smoother than the 2016 bike and in general it shifts more smoothly. The throttle is less sensitive in first gear on the new bike making it easyier to ride around without any jerkiness at very low speed. The tradeoff for that is that it takes a slightly bigger twist of the throttle to take off in first gear to avoid stalling when taking off gently, but I expect to get used to that soon enough.

A few other observations:

- The US bike doesn't have the same daylight running lights in the headlights as the European bikes. Looking at the headlights, you can see the feature in the headlight lens but it isn't illuminated. The US has strange regulations about things like that that are probably responsible.

- One headlight is the high beam and the other low, just like the 1200RS. I was hoping they would be both high and both low this time.

- I have the BMW auxiliary lights on my 2016 bike and wanted them on the 1250 also. They are available, but unlike the 1200RS, the Aux. lights turn off when the high beam is activated! How annoying. There have been many times riding at night where I appreciated the extra light from the Aux lights when the high beam is turned on. Maybe the LED lights are better, but more light is generally better at night. I ordered Denali lights instead. They come with a Canbus adaptor that should allow me to make them do what I want.

- The seat seemed a bit harder than my 2016 bike. That might be due to the seat breaking in on the older bike.

- I ordered the Hornig adaptor that repositions the Nav unit above the TFT display. Hornig presently does not show that adaptor as being compatible with the 1250, but I'm betting that is simply due to not yet having had time to assure it fits properly. I parked the 1250 next to my 1200 to compare, and it looks as if the adaptor should fit. I also ordered an MRA Vario touring screen and Helibar bar riser for the 1250, both of which I have, and enjoy, on my 1200.

I'm trading in my wife's 2017 R1200R which she barely ever rides, along with an R9T which I never ride. I'm keeping the 2016 R1200RS though. I love it too much to let it go.

Andygriff, I also noticed that the 1250RS doesn't have the "sport" view on the TFT that the R1250R has. I can't imagine why someone at BMW thought that makes sense.

I used to own one of the very first K1600GTs. It didn't have a digital speedometer even though it had a digital display that could certainly display speed. Many people on the K1600 forums complained about that and after several months BMW did provide a firmware update to add a digital speedo. Maybe if we all complain enough we can get them to add that sport view to the R1250RS (I'm not optimistic, but it's worth a try).

This bike is everything they said it would be. Most impressed with the
smoothness of low speed throttle response- very linear and not jerky at all...
which is something I have been searching for for years... from the 1100S to the R9T to
a Ducati Supersport!. Nothing behaves like this. Admittedly I never rode a 1200RS but
this bike is just so smooth!

Thanks Andygriffs, but I'm not on the road yet. I'll actually get the new bike after the dealer gets a truck here to pick up the bikes I'm trading in. I can't ride them both there at the same time.

I'm really looking forward to getting the 1250 home though.

Long Island and M3M what was the list price with shipping on your bikes?
BMW still does not have the RS or R listed on the US website.

I just took a look at the headlights of my 2016 RS and the right headlight bulb is illuminated when on low beam, with a smaller running light located in the corner of the reflector lit on both headlights. When on high beam, both main headlights are lit, including the two small running lights.

Also, when I bought my bike in June 2015, it came with exactly the same options as the Executive R1250RS, but at a list price of $18,300. So I guess a $1500 price increase in 4 years, together with the mechanical, suspension and other improvements on the new RS, is not too bad of an increase.

I was at Max at Brookfield this past Saturday and put a deposit down on an 1250 in Imperial Star Destroyer Blue. They have to ship one from another location as the one they had was already sold. The blue is the best color, but the crazy part of me did like the sparkly brown bronze which almost looks black when not in direct sunlight. Inshallah, I'll be picking it up this Saturday. I'm almost certainly going to be trading in my '04 Rockster which I'm going to miss, but I don't have the room for multiple bikes where I live.

Midlife Crisis. I decided to risk trying the Hornig Nav holder on the 1250 I just bought. It sure looks like it will fit. I'll be trying it out in the next few days. I sure hope it fits because I really hate the position of the NAV unit on the handlebars.. It's way out of my line-of-sight while riding.

Immersion suit, I was also at Max in Brookfield last Saturday, picking up my blue 1250. It was the first one they received. I probably saw you there.
