A quick catch up: I updated maps plus software on both my old Zumo 660 and the Nav 6 late last night and then imported my Favourites from the Zumo to the Nav 6. Now all I have to do is master Basecamp!! A lockdown winter sounds like a perfect opportunity to do that! 19 Plate R1250RS Exclusive with "bells & whistles" & full colour matched luggage |

Zitat von PlacidoD im Beitrag #76 I did likewise and stayed with the old Garmin routing software until the newer maps came out that didn’t play nice with it. Then I had to go to Basecamp. The older software kept crashing when calculating a programmed route.

The £300 Win 10 laptop I use for domestic use, mostly for internet browsing and occasionally streaming video to my TV via Chromecast, does not have the processing power to cope with it. Many other third party, web or app based platforms will produce a GPX file that can be imported to a Garmin/Nav. Just drop the file onto the SD card and import from there. Kurviger can produce some nice routes if you play with the parameters and will export routes to many file formats. Although, like you, I really like Google maps as it has very good waypoints with reviews and links to websites as well as Streetview in non Germanic countries. I tend to plan routes for individual days rather than a whole trip in one go, sometimes having plan A and a plan B to use depending in mood and other factors. I use Google maps to plan the route then plot it directly into my Zumo, making sure the intermediary points are on the exits of junctions or towns. I am capable of doing this in Basecamp but find it quicker to do on the Zumo as the processor in my laptop takes ages to crunch the data. Also, on trips, I only have an Android phone & tablet so being able to create and edit routes quickly using the Zumo itself is a great benefit. Google maps just works on all 3 of my devices and they all integrate with one another via my Google account. Shame they don't have a direct way to export the routes to other formats. |

So, as it happens, I have the processing power for Basecamp both at home and away. I bought a used Dell XPS13 - I5/256MB SSD - coming up 2 years ago (Seller was a delightful Astrophysics PHD student whose mum ran a fish and chip shop in Padiham!) to proof me against failure of my ancient desktop setup which I had upgraded several times but, by the time of its final demise, was 10 years old. I "limped" along with the XPS13 for a few weeks while the local repair shop confirmed repairs were uneconomic and then deciding on a replacement. With considerable misgivings I ultimately plumped for an outrageously expensive Lenovo one piece desktop running a Pentium I7 with 1.25GB of disk space, 16MB of RAM and a 27" 4K touchscreen plus Thunderbolt 3 connectivity to provide an upgrade route and fretted about how much I had spent .... and then Covid and lockdown hit which vindicated my purchase!!! The Lenovo makes for a wonderful PC and entertainment centre viewing operas and films with no trailing wires and can number-crunch large jpg and video files with ease and the little Dell XPS13 is light and portable enough to take with me when touring whether just for the weekend or for a fortnight abroad. So I should now be fine with Basecamp. But I would surely have given up on it 10 months ago on my old PC! Chris 19 Plate R1250RS Exclusive with "bells & whistles" & full colour matched luggage |

I can view a GPX file created by others without problem but if I download a track from my Zumo and ask it to convert this to a route to share then it takes ages. Same if I ask it to create a long route with a number of avoidance parameters set. |
