RE: Is the BMW Nav 5/6 really relevant today - 4

I've had quite good experiences with the Calimoto nav app on my smartphone. Whenever I find a good route, I download the recorded track from my Nav VI (bought for just over £400 on Ebay) into Basecamp, save the route and can then upload it / build it into another route. Have found some good roads that way.

It's also good to be able to share routes with other people via basecamp (though that may be possible in smartphone apps...?)

Have to say though that the Basecamp software feels pretty Windows '98 / 2000 now. Not the most user friendly software.

can someone explain how a downloaded map to an i-phone can provide navigation without a signal?

I have this this before but it make ZERO sense because without a signal, it could not tell you to make a turn in a mile
because it would have no idea where you are....

Does this forum have a sense for Navigator V vs VI? Novelty notwithstanding, does the Navigator VI get you that much more? I plugged in my Navigator V two days ago and it seemed quite reasonable. I'm all for new devices and software but...

My two cents? Save the money and get the Nav V if you want system integration. The VI is more polished, but it has QA issues that should not exist in a $1,000 USD retail unit. I like my VI, but I honestly get better performance from my Zumo 660.

I am going to piggy back on this thread for more feedback on Nav V versus Nav 6 versus Zumo 660.

I occasionally surf Ebay looking for a Nav 6 bargain. There are none at the moment but I might spot something in the dead of winter and so just want to be armed with knowledge so as to make quick decisions on a bid. I must have had my Zumo 660 8-9 years. It is slow but I know it well.

What additional features do I get with a Nav V (Aside from the fact that it obviously it works with the wheel)?
What additional features do I get with Nav VI over a Nav V aside from a faster processor and a brighter screen?

My gut reaction is to go for a Nav 6 at a good price or not bother at all but plainly a Nav V that I could pick up at say little more than £100 would have some attraction.

The grand plan is to offer someone local a deal paying them cash so they can avoid Ebay and Paypal fees. Maybe that will not succeed but with a functioning Zumo 660 I can afford to be patient.

The Nav V has (if I remember correctly) only 8 GB of storage. Following a failed attempt to update the Europe map data, I found that this was no longer big enough and had to install an SD card to provide additional space. I seem to remember it was problematical getting the maps and subsequent updates to use the extra space, requiring completely resetting the device and starting from scratch, and this happened more than once.

On that basis alone I would recommend the Nav VI if you require full European maps and not just the UK, though personally I have now moved on to using a smartphone with navigation apps as my satnav.

P.S. I see you have swapped screens. Is the new one an MRA Vario? Any particular reason for the swap from the Givi?

I am looking at the the new R1250RT 10.25" TFT with navigation (via phone connection) on the BMW website and it tells me there will probably not be a Bmw Nav 7.

I think your summary is pretty accurate. It is clear from this blog that most RS rider live in well populated areas with good cell phone service and do not really get out and ride in more remote areas. this is easily understandable in Europe. In the US it is much more problematic. Clearly the highly populated states have good coverage, the cell companies have done a good job of having pretty seamless coverage along the interstates and most traveled highways and well populated areas. But in many states, in in my state Vermont in particular once you are off these major roads you cell coverage is much less likely. Here the cell companies claim coverage to about 95% of the people (this is disputed) but freely acknowledge that around 75% of the state land area does not have coverage.

The assumption that a Cell phone GPS capabilities is equal to a dedicated unit like Garmin is false. The cell phone packaging does not allow equal antenna capability. This is most important as good signal strength from multiple satellites is critical for accurate location. Yes the cell phone "fuse data" from cell tower location to augment this shortfall, but again if it is only in contact with one cell tower does not mean much. While I do not know specifically it is not clear to me that cell phone GPS imbedded reciever and algorithms are equal or let alone better that those units like Garmin. Note a significant portion of Garmin's business is now Aircraft navigation and instrumentation, Military GPS applications (much more accurate technology), ship board, etc.

Yes I much prefer Google maps for its great and constantly upgraded data base beyond physical location and I use this for planning, finding gas, points of interest, rooms often. However, when I'm riding, wandering new roads, figuring which way to turn next I find I need a real dedicated GPS.

I do not see the need for real GPS to be going away for riders like me.

ps I find that a GS rider, an adventure rider, that does not need a real GPS a bit of an oxymoron!
