Being of the pre-TFT generation I get that the App and TFT is great for A-B directions but for me having a sat nav is all about planning a days ride, picking the roads I want to use and uploading that to the Nav'.

I also agree that the Wonder Wheel is a bit gimmicky, BUT once I got used to it, I found it preferable to fiddling with the GPS screen while riding. It’s just easier to scroll up/down and press in/out to navigate the screens compared to looking down while taking a hand completely off a grip to press buttons on a screen.

Even with the sweet British accent, it's still someone telling me where to go (and sometimes getting upset when we don't). If we're looking at it on a map, it's somehow our choice. You would think the German engineers would understand.

I do have the MRA app on the phone, but have to say I've never actually used in in anger (the phone stays firmly in my pocket while riding). Like you I started off using MyRoute for planning routes on the PC, for use on my Nav V, having used the predecessor program Tyre with a TomTom 400. I found transferring routes to the Nav was a bit hit or miss, and sometimes the routes would get changed by the Nav when it loaded them. However, I was so impressed by the ease of creating routes compared to BaseCamp that I took up a special offer for lifetime Gold membership. When they later introduced the MyRoute Navigation app I became an early adopter of that, and while it was a bit glitchy in the early days it has steadily improved. I'm not sure, but I think the product range is a bit different now, and maybe the PC web based routing is separate to the phone based routing with the former maybe not included in some options. However I have the ability to do both, so I tend to do most of my route planning on the PC prior to a trip, with separate routes for each day, often tied in with advance hotel bookings on booking.com so that I can plan the route to take me right to the hotel. I download the daily routes to the phone which is extremely simple, and together with the country maps pre-loaded onto the phone, means I am not dependent on having a phone signal while riding. During the route planning stage I often also recce parts of the route on Google Street View to find the nicest roads, and also the last bit of the route to the hotel, just to get a feel for it, which I find very helpful, especially where there are tricky one way systems in large towns and cities. I have occasionally stopped and modified a route on the phone where I have encountered road closures, and that works very well, but would always prefer to do the main route planning on PC or laptop, and as I normally take a mini laptop on trips, I can easily amend routes in the evening for the next day if required, and book hotels for parts of the trip I haven't pre-booked. Overall I am pretty happy with this system and sold my Nav V quite a long time ago. I have done extensive tours in 2017, 18 and 19 in Spain and France using just MyRoute on a smartphone, so I would say that it is perfectly practical to ditch the NAV in favour of a smartphone based solution. Though it is not really necessary, I fairly early on changed to having a spare phone dedicated for satnav duties, but with both phones set up as identically as possible including satnav apps, so that I would have a backup in case of damage or theft of either. Both MyRoute and TomTom will run on either phone without needing to buy additional licenses. I've recently changed from a Google Pixel phone to using a second hand Samsung S9+ as my main phone and an S8+ as the satnav phone - total cost for both about £375. Both have bright displays and are water resistant so are ideal. Here are pictures of when I first set this up on my new RS, using an MV GPS relocation bar and a Quadlock mount, having previously used a similarly positioned mount on a GS. I subsequently removed the BMW mount and cable, though I use its connector in the right side fairing to provide power to a 12V to USB converter for powering the phone.

I keep my phone primarily as my communicator, diary and notes. I enjoy using Basecamp to both plan and review trips. I don’t use phone or music while riding. I’ve watched riders spending ages before a ride mounting and connecting all sorts of hardware before they get going. No thanks. Am I a Luddite? Each to his own.

Smartlink is what is what provides the Nav your weather, traffic, etc. It's not something I use every day, but it's nice to be able to send a destination address from phone to Nav.

Zitat von Lee im Beitrag #21 Agree. my Golf has navigation and also a secondary turn-by-turn display on the instrument cluster between tach and speedometer. That area is invisible to me as I drive with the map on the centre console activated. For me it is not a useful display for the same reason that you gave. Moreover, when riding unfamiliar roads [at speed], even if not following directions, the active map is most useful for informing on curves coming up especially after cresting a hill or going around a blind corner.

I'm no where near as organized as most of you. When I do long trips, 2 or 3 thousand miles, i just use google maps on my PC to pick out the high points, get a feel for the distance time involve, and sort of plan where I'll end up each day. I tried base camp and my attention deficit problems precluded me for really getting into that. I have never downloaded a route! |
