Meanwhile California, some other states, and the U.S. government, as well as some governments in the EU, are planning on banning the sale of gas and diesel vehicles, including even tractor trailers by 2035, or in some cases 2030. While much of the car buying customers in California seem to be willing to switch to electric (so far), the big trucking companies are having a fit about the state demanding that they toss out their diesel interstate big-rigs and switch to electric trucks. They predict that it just isn't going to happen any time soon with the state of the current technology and electrical/charging infrastructure.

Much as I enjoy watching Marc and Marie (https://www.youtube.com/@MarcTravels) I despair at having the options currenty available here in south-west England. Their european electric bike travels are well worth a watch and an example of how some countreis/companies are much further ahead of the curve than we seem to be here in uk.

We have local areas being developed for solar/wind farms that are unable to connect to the national power grid within years.

Campsites with 4/500 spaces and maybe 2/3/4 charge points, not rapid chargers and local power services unable to supply the huge increase in amps/power needed cannot be supplied.

They will never cope with even a 10% electric vehicle customer base for visitors when they arrive/days trips and a fully charged car to get home after a holiday here.

Ignoring the poor quality feedback on Tesla, owners selling and reverting to petrol/deisel (gas-usa) and others on the 'new electric bandwagon' stuck in 'charger queues' I have no idea what I should take as my next car purchase. Maybe a fuel/hybrid at the minimum but the added issue of a heavy battery and ice engine seems a negative environment choice.

Obviously Covid/low mileage over last three years has meant neither our 5+ years old deisel car or bike has been replaced but I have no idea what to buy next, probably not deisel, likely petrol, NOT electric.

A 'second bike/car' of electric power may be a great political 'green' choice but having two vehicles to do the job I currently carry out with only one seems excessive?

What does a kwH of electricity and liter of petrol cost you in your area?

This can vary across uk and whether using motorway services, holiday locations, city centre or if you are lucky to have some fake competiton in an area.

Unleaded in Devon can be £1.44 per litre, out on dartmoor could be 10p dearer so using my local Shell site at Trago Mills I use 99/100 octane 5% rather than the 95 octane/10% mix., costing around £1.55 per litre.

My RS and all my R1200's have had super unleaded and various testers have shown it is a cost/miles per gallon balance so I prefer the higher spec fuels.

As far as house gas/electric costs per unit, I was very lucky, sept 2021 to lock in a 2 year british gas deal, running out october this year 2023 so missed many of the huge Russia war, Ukraine invasion influenced issues. I think I better be sitting down in October when I renew, although I did save the £400 payout our governemt paid every to offset high domestic fuel tarriffs which I was not affected by, at that time.

I guess, despite prices dropping back from last years very high it is unlikely to revert to the Standard unit rate 4.572p per kWh I am currently paying. (plus daily standing charges for services.)

I think current prices are around 10p per KwH but perhaps someone on a new tarrif can advise you?

I viewed todays marctravels ( www.youtube.com/@MarcTravels ) in Istanbul and just see the rant about electric chargers, apps needed, correct phone numbers and you see why cars with a fuel tank, driver with a credit card/cash etc is still the travellers friend.

Here's my point, 1) most four-wheel vehicle (car, SUV and Pick-ups in the US) trips are less than 30-miles in the US. I assume Europe is similar. 2) The low rpm torque characteristics are desirable as demonstrated by the 48-volt mild-hybrids found in BMW's M340 and M540 sedans and SUVs. 3) Plug-in hybrids can provide low RPM grunt from the electric motor and an all-electric range of 20 or more miles. 4) At 1.5 pounds per liter, your fuel cost is about $7 per US gallon. For a 28 MPG car or SUV, that's a $0.25/mile fuel cost. In the case of a PHEV, your e-range is approximately 2 miles per kW-Hr. Pure EVs, do better at nearly 3-miles per kW-Hr. If the cost of your electrical service is ~4.6p (5.7-US cents per kW-Hr), then your fuel (energy) cost per mile would be $0.02/mile with an EV or $0.03/mile with a PHEV.


BTW - wherever you are, I'm moving there. My per kW-hr cost, inclusive of all taxes and fees is $0.12~0.13.

My home KWH cost is around 40 cents per unit. Gas prices around here range from $4.84 to $5.28 per gallon of 87 "pump" octane.

When I bought my PHEV in Dec 2020, it was the same price after manufacturer discounts as the ICE version of the car.

In my case, it was a 2021 330i vs 330e. The MSRP difference was $2000 then, but an MFG rebate leveled the price. Also, all of that was separate from any gov't rebates/incentives. In the US, that is something that you take care of on your federal tax return or how your state may handle things.......it's separate from the deal with the dealer

Both Ford and GM have jumped on the Tesla Supercharger bandwagon according to recent news reports. They will be adopting Tesla as the standard for charging their future vehicles and even their current EVs once they can be updated with new charging connectors. The news media believes that the Tesla charging system will eventually be the new standard in the U.S., and possibly in Europe too, in the future according to news reports yesterday.

Attached is an article explaining this charging network deal.

Will this also be the standard for new electric motorcycles, who knows? The electric motorcycle market (other than in China) is so small that no one, including politicians, regulators and the vehicle and charging industry (and most motorcycle buyers), are not paying any attention to them.

Honda apparently has been working on developing a hybrid gas/electric motorcycle with two electric motors according to this article. It looks way too complicated to me. https://www.motorcycle.com/bikes/new-mod...motors-44592382

In today's U.S. EV news seven major electric vehicle car manufacturers have formed a joint venture and plan to spend at least $1 billion to install as many as 30,000 DC fast charging stations on major highways and other locations in the U.S. and Canada. Article attached.

It looks like Tesla was fibbing a bit when they specified long battery ranges for their cars. See the attached article that was in my newspaper today. I bet they are not the only manufactuer that does that.
