sounds kind of crazy to me, anyone have a 2023 and can take a picture of the front valve install location? I assume its an air inlet to assist with the water drain so, it should be visible on the top.

Found it !

The second valve is installed as per the drawing, into the bottem of the swing arm just above the exhaust manifold. Too tight of an area for a photo. You can feel it, and pull it out real easy if you wanted to. its a one way valve so its installed in the opposite direction of the rear valve, I assume to let air in. If water found its way there I expect it would also go in. The exhaust manifold does shelter it a bit in that loction but also throws plenty of heat at the rubber. The exhaust manifold would need to be removed to dirll that hole if someone wanted to install it there.

After the sales guy noticed a funny looking guy fondeling the underside of their new bikes, he got the attention of the mechanic's. I asked them what there thoughts were on these valves. They didn't like them and said if it were their bike, they would not install them. They fall off often and disapear leaving everything exposed to the elements. The reccomdendation was to clean out anaually and re-lube. I think I'm going to continue to do just that and not install the valves for now. I seal my front and back boots real well so I'm thinking it must be condensation build up. Since my 2016 RS shaft seized to the finial drive 5 years ago, I have cleaned and re-lubed every fall. So far no issues. The valves could have been a nice auto fix, now I'm thinking maybe not.

Thanks for that useful info Codydawg. Thinking I might skip the valves then, and just do a spline lube at yearly intervals as well. I very seldom ride in rain anyway.

Just fyi if anyone interested in the size of the valve.

I've just had both mods done on my 2016 1200RS (circlips & drive shaft.) at Group1 Brighton. I had a chat with the technician before he started and as soon as I said the bike has 49,000 miles on the clock, he said that it would be a straight replacement of the shaft, as well as the drain valve fitting. The valve is a really loose fit - seems like a little push would force it back into the swinging arm or a little pull would remove it completely!

Good news Ray. Just for clarity, was that all done for free? Obviously your bike is way out of warranty, as is mine, that is also a 2016RS. I was about to take the rear end of mine apart to check it out, re-grease etc. but if they would do this gratis as part of the recall, I shall not bother and will just bring it in.

My 2017 RS is getting both recalls done on the 4th and I have requested the splines to be greased at that time - I think it will cost 30mins extra time at my cost.

For me it is worth it and I am sure if there is any issue the shaft will be changed anyway - worth the possible outlay for either "peace of mind/replacement parts"

Contact your dealer for the recall and then ask for the spline regrease so everything is covered.

Adding update to both threads regarding this topic while my current 2017 RS which is having a 'night out at the dealers!'

As stated elsewhere I booked in today to get both updates for ventilation unit and passenger footrest clips and also agreed to pay for a spline regrease BUT.............

This is not a BMW recall, merely and alteration in 'service schedule' rquirements from now on. (it will make some sense)

Anyone with an older pre water assisted cooling 1200 is now advised that the original 'filled for life/maintenance free' bevel unit now gets a regular 6k oil change.

My R1200ST bevel unit needed an overhaul due to early 'lack of maintenance due to not replacing oil' which is now, I assume' scheduled for all the new R 12 oil cooled retro 1200's currently?

This now makes sense for our RS as bmw have changed their "maintenance free shaft drive procedure" to get yearly/6k/variable spline regrease at owners cost during servicing, ok?

Now we early owners are caught in this same 'trap' of not greasing splines due to no bmw request originally.

We are now covered by this oversight and in my case it seems likely a new shaft, possiby bevel unit and workshop costs are being covered by bmw, which is brilliant.

No dodging this and going forward it will also include a new shaft drive at 60,000km/37k miles free of charge.

For me this has meant as the technician could not separate the drive shaft from the bevel drive I will now not need to pay the spline grease charges as any work now needed is covered, parts and labour by bmw. Surely this is the best result and well worth the peace of mind - pay for a grease and all is ok OR it's not ok and bmw will restore your bike!

Obviously this is a great outcome for me, except I have been loaned an R1250RS while this extra work is carried out.

Due to this 'no charge' and looking at a few items on sale I have purchase a new system 7 helmet and gloves and maybe a new bike, R1300RS ?

Hope this gives you the temptation to get this 'non-recall' ie. NO panic - just add to your next service and know you are being supported by bmw.

Well your going to have to give us a review on the 1250 as compared to the 1200 ... I was talking to a GS rider in front of the local BMW shop and he was thrilled with the 1250. He said he didn't want to trade in the 1200 GS as he loved the bike but after having the 1250 he much prefers that ... just one opinion ...
I have been looking at 1200 gs's for maybe a beater bike/ winter bike so to speak but all this drive shaft stuff is daunting ...

This whole mess reminds me of the /5 airhead spline which was only about a centimeter wide. half was in the wheel hub and the other on the final drive. I was warned about it and I kept it packed with stiff grease. Then after I put a 900 top end on the bike I had the spline changed out to a /6 spline which is at least 30cm wide and I still kept it packed with grease. The grease protects splines from shock which would have the /5 splines looking like a radial cut set of gears and then would fail of course ....

blimey, a foot wide spline!

lol .... I was off by a factor of ten .... the improved /6 airhead spline is about 30mm wide or about an inch .... lol I do use the metric system as I do work with bicycles, motorcycles
and in archeology .... I also picked up some metric when I worked on Japanese motorcycles as a kid .... lol
