Presuming you stick with the same battery manufacturer, I'd ditch the Optimate and install a standard fused pigtail connector to the battery. Every month (if bike is sitting unused), plug in a standard 12v trickle charger until it indicates the battery is fully charged. If the problem stops, it was your charger not doing the job. Batteries can sit for several months and still be good. Never had this be an issue. Trickle charging when the bike has sat for several weeks has done fine for me so far. If a battery is failing from sitting, it's poorly made.

^Well said "zer0netgain". My 2016 OEM battery failed from "god knows what", and not just sitting. And, yes, it was poorly made. No problems with a 2 year old O'Reilly-chain, Superstart Silver AGM battery as replacement. I can go out in the garage right now, in New England, after probably 2 months since last start, no charger, no pigtail, and it will start. |

My OE battery, a Yuasa YTZ14S made in Japan, is showing signs of its age, made in April 2016. I bought the bike in Sept 2016.

Exide battery ordered from Tayna yesterday afternoon at 4pm. Yodel interrupted my lunch to deliver it at 1.05pm this afternoon. Read 12.7V out of the box so, 3 hours on the Optimate and it was full, showing 13.5V. Now fitted and the motor certainly spins with more enthusiasm

I will never go back to this idiotic leaden stuff after replacing all my motorbike batteries with LiFePO4 types ... Honestly, these are below 70€ now (4 Ah, which will even start a fucking Harley) and they do not lose any charge over the winter months. I am using them for 4 years now and have no reason to complain until now.
