RE: Continental Road Attack 3 - 2

I am currently irritated with my Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tires that came on my Zero S electric motorcycle. After 6,000 miles the tires are completely shot, although they did wear evenly. You would think that tires on an electric motorcycle that has never carried a passenger or been ridden at speeds faster than 70 mph, would last longer. The Continental Road Attack 3 tires seem like a good replacement choice. However, I have a set of Michelin Street Radial tires in my closet ready to be installed on the Zero. I think I will give the Contis a try next time.

I had a Monster 1100 that came with Diablo Rosso IIs and the tire life was similar.

I weigh 150 pounds and ride without bags or passenger. I put the standard (not GT) version RA3 on my RS and think it will be fine.

Fully recognizing not everyone enjoys the sweeper-loving attributes of an R 1200 RS, I nevertheless must convey what a difference-maker these tires have been for my bike. Until the ContiRoadAttack 3 tires got slipped on, terms like "neutral" and "planted" didn't carry much meaning for me.

The author's experience is basically the same as mine.

Half or more of the miles were on the highway typically going an indicated 80 MPH. The rest were pretty much driving back roads at five miles over the limit. There aren't really any roads around here where it makes sense to drive like a racer wannabe.

I have now done about three and a half thousand miles on the Dunlop Roadsmart 3s that I had fitted recently and here are my short impressions.

I have no complaint about stability, cornering and wear rate/profiling. All of these seem good but I have had problems with losing and spinning the rear. Yesterday, I made a fairly long journey (about 450 miles), much of it in rain. The roads should have been washed clean of diesel etc. although it has been very dry and I am not a drag star away from traffic lights etc. I do not normally experience rear wheel loss but had about five occasions yesterday when the wheel either spun and the traction control slotted in, or it actually slid out, meaning that a bit of opposite lock was necessary to get around the corner. Nothing too dramatic but it has made me a little suspicious of the tyre's wet road ability.

My previous tyres on this bike (Michelin RP 4s) never gave me concerns here, although their wear profile made them very unstable and I changed the while they still had a bit of tread left at 9,200 miles. I do not think that my right hand is clumsier than it has been and pressures etc. were spot on. Just me and my panniers on the bike.

Anyone else experienced this?

I was considering Avons on mine as i could get them for half the price of the Metzeler Z01's I fitted but read a review where the tester said that grip in the wet on a heavier bike (Z1000SX) wasn't great so decided to stick with either Michelin or Metzeler and given how I disliked the drop in stability of the PR4's on my F800 near the end of their life I went with the Metzelers

Re the Dunlop Roadsmart. I liked the feel of the tyres and they gave me greater confidence.
However, the front tyre did slide and I crashed on a left corner. Best guess was I hit a small metal service plate sunken into the bitumen. The plate is about 25 x 25 cm. No "wiggle" in the bars, just ongoing loss of traction, no "kick back" of regaining traction through the bars.
As Gomer Pyle would say "Surprise surprise surprise ".

Richard: The TC system does of course control this and it did. The tyre did not lock up or spin for more than a second or so on any of those occasions. I did not crash but you can feel it kick in when it does operate and the tyre still lets go to some extent. I don't actually think that there would have been any chance of me crashing as I have survived much more extreme losses of traction in the past when there was no TC there to help out but who knows? It is good to know that it does kick in and I am grateful for the help. Similarly with ABS, even though I have only ever had it kick in once- on a R1100RS years ago in France- it definitely saved the day then!

I still feel that the grip of the rear Dunlop is a worry in the wet. I will not change them before their time is up as I did with the Michelins but will certainly be more cautious in the wet in future. Of course, it is always worth remembering (if you are of a certain age that is!) just how good tyres are these days compared with what they used to be like in the dark ages. I remember when riding on wet roads was pretty similar to riding on sheet ice now! Very scary.

DJBee out of interest what mode did you have the bike in Dynamic, Road, Rain, User when experiencing the Dunlop letting go "to some extent" in the wet weather? I was thinking about the Dunlops but decided to stick to what I knew, Michelin PR4s, which whilst I can get it let go in the wet is only when I want it to, or rather never unexpectedly, unless when crossing the low traction items (white line, drain covers, gravel etc.) My tyre life is low as I do love to use the torque of the RS - last rear PR4 lasted 4300 miles and never had the pannier/luggage or pillion during the period, and this is the first time the I've changed the rear on its own, up until now front and rear wore out together (front still has 1,000 ~ 1500 miles left) - dam that Hilltop tune
