The shaft was stuck in both ends and I am now getting a new shaft, new complete bevel drive and all labour costs covered.

Yeah. I disagree. The engineers knew this was coming from the beginning. Those with catastrophic shaft failures get nothing but a broken bike to fix.

Strange it is on the newer water cooled versions, I assume both RS variants, early 2015 I had as well as the later, from 2017 that they have repaired.

Having taken my 2005 R1200ST apart in around 2014 to replace one lower bevel drive bearing I removed the swing arm completely and every other bearing was 'as new'' and the driveshaft splines were all covered in grease. I also had a complete bevel overhaul for £400 at 32,000 miles but that is also a 'sealed for life' which is now covered by oil changes.
Only the failure of a fibre washer caused water ingress for the bearing failure otherwise it was sealed very well.

As well as a complete replacement on my RS the new procedure is for a newly specified 12k shaft regrease with different spec grease being used.

His maths are out as 60,000k equates to 37,500 miles but still good news.
I have a few miles to go before getting to this figure so will keep checking the shaft myself on an annual basis.

My best guess is that manufacturers only have to notify consumers of recalls. This is a service bulletin…which means nothing until a customer asks about it. They probably, at best, tell the customer when they bring the bike in for service, but many owners do their own work.

Does anyone know what "general service behavior of the customer" means?

My experience with the driveshaft “warranty” is:

I do my own servicing – took driveshaft out to check it and there was noticeable notches in both universal joints, and a bit of surface corrosion on them too. Bike is at 52,000 miles

Phoned up Motorrad Bahnstormer Alton and asked how much a replacement would be – gave bike model and year R1200RS 2015.

Was told that due to a technical campaign (I’m sure that was the words used) they were reduced to £105 – which I thought was very reasonable.

Before I could order it though the guy then asks me for my bike registration which I provide, and he informs me the bike is subject to the same technical campaign, meaning if they inspect the drive-shaft and find it to be faulty it’ll be replaced for free.

Great I say, I can bring the drive-shaft to you this afternoon as it is out of the bike.
He replies, Oh, sorry it needs to be in the bike, as we need to do a mod and we need the bike for at least 8 hours.
Okay fair enough, I book a future date, reassemble the bike. On booked day ride in, ride out on a loaner F900XR, return the next day to pick up my bike with a new shaft and vent(s) added to swing-arm and the promise that if the shaft fails within 30,000 miles (I think that’s right), they’ll replace it for free again – happy days.

The very slight thrum I was feeling in the bike, on a neutral throttle whilst carrying weight (i.e. luggage), has gone away, I know this as it is what started me looking at the shaft in the first place. And I’m convinced that it is less clunky when going from slight “on throttle” to “off throttle” – I think this is called ‘lash’ – but I’m not 100% sure about this ‘improvement' as I didn’t notice it being clunky before the replacement – but then that maybe because it developed over 50,000 miles and it was just the norm to me.

I asked for a check and grease of the shaft at 10k miles during a service, got quoted £27 , ended up with a new drive shaft under warranty, shaft was stuck and the UJ was ‘notchy’ bike is only three years old. Slightly worrying for a long life, hope the new ones are better or is it a design fault?

The way I understand, the main issue is ... Bmw thought the shaft and final drive were sealed for life or offered them as such ..... if they did get moisture in them without any maintenance they will fail ... So now they do change the fluids and grease splines and anything else they can during planned maintenance. So instead of a recall, BMW are replacing the shafts for free as they find them, they say they went out and bought a ship load of them.
As far as the design, if the part is serviced and maintained regularly then the design is adequate. On the 1300 they moved the trans to under the engine which lowers the shaft and reduces sharp bends hopefully making them tougher.
