There is a school of thought that says gear changes are less clunky if the oil level is mid to lower level. Maybe they were thinking of this or maybe they cocked up..... |

I've heard from more than one source that if you thrash the balls off a bike during its running-in period it makes it less likely to burn oil during its subsequent life - seems totally counterintuitive to me. Is there anything to this? (Never owned a brand new bike myself so never had to consider this personally)

As a new vehicle is on fresh tyres and is new to me in terms of ergonomics and performance, I am likely to be a little cautious to begin with until I am confident I have sussed the location of switchgear, optimum gear shift revs etc etc.

This seems to comport with the assertion made by those who advocate "flogging" the bike during break in. The idea being that break in sets up the cylinders based on the use experienced. So, drive like an old lady for the break in and you leave the motor vulnerable when pushing high RPMs later. Cars are different because the RPM range never gets close to redline in any amount of "normal" driving.

However, that didn't seem to be the case with my 2007 R1200R and 2016 RS. Better ring material, perhaps?

I tried the hard run in with an early (200 mile) oil change on my 2004 GS. It didn't use any oil but neither does my 2015 RS that was run in more congenitally. |

Neither one of our R1200RSs used a noticeable amount of oil.
