RE: New Michelin tyre, again, #6 in an infinite series - 6

((((Am about to pop some new tyres on the bike, probably going for Road 6. I gather the GTs are for heavier bikes is that right, any reason you went for the GTs over the standard Roads? The GTs are a bit more expensive.)))))

I like a heavy solid tire, they hold up better under hard braking, or so they say, and I don't like a light squirmy medium tire. It's likely that cupping would be more likely with the plain version in theory. my last tires were very strongly cupped ...... I think the RS is not a small or medium bike and I ride mine with the bags on all the time, and I weigh beyond 250 lbs so I felt much better with GTs on there. I do like long day rides and light touring and carry tools and such with heavy cold weather gear ALL the time. if not for myself I can also stop and help others who might need some help ... Once up on Vail pass in july it snowed a foot, and I rode thru it, long story ....
This was also an issue with my airhead, they tended to want to sell me medium tires because it was a 600 (later a 900). But back in those days the airheads were all the same bike from 500cc to 1000cc for the most part. Later on I got a stainless spoke job with sun rims for the airhead and they recommended Dunlop touring tires and those were so much better, clearly. The dunlops were still good enough in the corners that i was rarely able to challenge them although they don't like paint too much. ....
So this is the same situation really. I would rather have a strong cut resistant tire that wears well and doesn't develop cupping, than one for all out cornering. I'm a firm believer that most folks aren't aware of how hard theirs tires can be pushed anyway .... if the GT holds up better it will be a worthy investment as they are fairly expensive with much new design and technology in them.
Just to clarify the prices for just the tires was 201.00 for the front and 264.00 for the rear in dollars, without tax and all that, which according to retail is low by about 100.00 each ....

I got the R6 GT only because they were fitted by my BMW dealer at a service and they wouldn’t fit the non-GT version as it’s not (or wasn’t at the time) ‘approved’ for the R1250RS.
Now I’m probably almost 100lb lighter than you, rarely fit the panniers or take a pillion and I ride like a pussy! The non GT would have been fine (I had the non GT R5 before) for me, surprisingly I could tell the tyres were stiffer and less communicative at first, but after a few hundred miles forgot all about it. Which is pretty much what you want from a tyre! No shimmy, progressive break away and very confidence inspiring.

What mileage do you expect from Road 6 GT? My Metzeler Roadtec 01's have nearly 6,000 miles and still look good, though I can feel some "heaviness" on the front when cold and at low speed, a sign they need changing even if the tread still has a way to go before the wear bars. Going back and forth over Michelin vs Metzeler...

I added the cynical comment that BMW most likely ordered a batch of GT spec tyres at a discount as they are specified for the RT, then tell everyone else they are the "recommended" tyre for their bike. A little white lie to maximise profits. Of course not, they wouldn't do this would they?

The GT was defintely the recommended fit for the 1200RS - note that the Michelin website will only allow you to select 2023 for the R1250RS as a model year. My hunch is that the change to the ESA for the 1250 has altered the recommendation. The algorothim for the 1250 is supposedley more complex.

Well I hope better than the 3100 miles the front metzler. The GTs are pretty stiff but do ride really well. I'm guessing the rebound is working better with them. it seams to handle a series of bumps very well where before it seems you felt more of the bumps after the first hit. (colorado has really rough roads) With just one bump you do feel more harshness with the GT. But it seems the tires are sending out the signals that they might be over inflated a little ... I'm looking into that but it is certainly out of bounds territory to adjust pressures .....
Right now winter has returned with vengeance here but maybe in a week or so I can get out and try the 10/20 rule and see how much the tires are heating up. They do ride very well and it might be best just to leave it. They run these on the RT and the 1600 Gt. Only the GT do they call for higher pressures.
But, all in all, I don't recommend the GT on the RS because of all the possibilities especially rider weight. I may have jumped before I really looked well. But I definitely got a tougher set of tires for sure .... Well' see how it goes ...
