Your charger is just doing what the bike alternator would do on a long ride. Just be aware that your simple charger will not recover the AGM battery if it is completely flat. You need a smart charger with a special programme to wake up a flat AGM as they have a higher internal resistance when flat. In your current situation, just topping up a partly charged battery, that charger is fine as the AGM battery acts like any other lead-acid battery. |

Why do you need them on charge permanently? Modern batteries like AGM do not discharge very quickly without a load so you are just wasting energy keeping the Optimates powered. You could actually just use one Optimate and rotate it from battery to battery. One day on charge, one month rest. |

After too many years working with electric vehicles, batteries and charging systems I have always considered battery cycling to be beneficial. Admittedly lead acid traction batteries are meant to be discharged and charged on a daily basis. Their plates are thicker and less numerous than a battery meant for starting only. |

Thanks for the replies. The multiple batteries are because I have three bikes and like to keep the batteries topped up without having to go and swap chargers or batteries around. Admittedly, a slightly expensive way of doing this but it works for me! The Optimate linked to the BMW is a CanBus friendly one. My experience with motorcycle (ie. small) batteries is that if left for even fairly short periods of time, they quite quickly discharge and sulphate and they are expensive! I have been charging batteries like this for years and usually get at least five years or so out of a battery. I have also found that Yuasas are better than most other makes for what that is worth.
