So I bought an Optimate charger designed exclusively to recharge lithium batteries. On the other hand, you have to ask yourself how the lithium battery is being recharged by the bike's normal charging system as you go riding down the highway - which also seems to work OK.

I agree with Wessie except that I like the tender type charger just fine. I use mine about once a month during the winter and plug it in for a day or half day. That's plenty of time to keep the battery up. |

The other thing I do in the winter is turn the ignition on for 15 minutes so the lights come on and draw the battery down a ways before attaching the charger. |

Now I am retired I can advise on "floating batteries on a constant charge" and the problems that can arise. |

Zitat von Dave H im Beitrag #43 I'm probably teaching my granny how to suck eggs here, but lead/acid batteries come in various internal constructions, depending on their expected usage. Car batteries (and bike batteries) are designed for rapid discharge (caused by starting the engine) and fast recharge (from just driving/riding), assuming the alternator/regulator are working as they should. Backup batteries are designed to be on constant charge, and then slow discharge when taken off charge (e.g. in the event of a mains failure). I deal with sites that are battery-backed and have been on float for 5+ years, but the batteries power the connected kit perfectly when the mains fails. In the case you quoted, I suspect that car batteries were the wrong choice for the job, and as you correctly pointed out, if they were never discharged/recharged, then they shouldn't be expected to work when the mains actually failed.
