Electronics » The end of the Garmin BMW Navigator?

Could be. It looks like BMW finally is dumping their GPS Navigator and replacing it with this new integrated display. If it works well it is sure to be a big improvement for most riders. But not for me. I would suffer information overload looking at that screen. It is all that I can do to stay focused on my riding and all of the strange things going on around me. Well, the TFT makes a GPS redundant for many people. I’d still have one, but a big selling point was integration with the bike’s systems. The TFT removes most all of that value, so I’d go with a better GPS as Garmin has largely lost me as a customer.

The built-in navigation in my car is nowhere near as effective or as good to use as my BMW-branded Garmin. Sure enough having the TFT do it all would be nice but it'll take years for them to catch up.

I very much like the idea of an one integrated Large display. I do not like the shown 1/3 screen GPS ang having to do all the set up from a phone. Dumb.
Audi has long had one multifuntion screen which allow the GPS info shown much larger. I like that. Very much

From experience google has the best map data base, with Garmin second. I hope BMW does not subscribe to some crappy data base like my Subaru

To be clear I’m not a fan of phone set up. I have to stop take off my gloves put on my glasses and deal with fat fingers

Not sure how route planning would work in the app as it's the main reason I use a Garmin/Navigator product as I like to choose the roads I ride.

Also means the end of my nav mount business, the bastards, how dare they, I'll sue them

The TFT screen made me sell my Navigator VI although it is not because of the current er even future navigation posibilities of the phone/screen combination. I sold it because I can't use the wonderwheel immediatly for zooming in or out unless I push a button first. And as I'm in favour of using the sportscreen (better rev counter) it would even require more buttons to touch.
So I simply bought a Zumo XT which is faster, better routing, has more memory and far more additional features. And the zoom buttons stay on top. The additional loss of a correct working clock on the RS is something I simply accept.

And that new GPS is also mounted, using the original Vortex GPS mount, above the TFT screen.

I will venture to guess that the display on the TFT will have a couple of options. Perhaps 1 with large gauges and no GPS, 1 with a 50 50 split, 1 with a large GPS screen and small gauges, and so on. Just a thought.

Nope, that doesn't fit as the contacts on the XT differ from the NAV's. Shape is different too.

The XT comes with it's own mount and with an (BMW) adapter (picture 3&4) of which I only used 1 half (picture 1) due to the screw holes, I fitted it on the metal axel of the NAV mount.

Now I'm waiting for the BMW accessory cable which are in back office untill the end of September.

Why are you so worried about the demise of the Sat nav, I use the maps on my phone now and it displays on the TFT, much neater and less clutter.
