Garmin Basecamp although a creaky old application, especially with Apple desktops/laptops is in my experience the best currently available for planning riding routes.

Same here - I bought the lifetime membership too, and they are steadily improving it, with things like categorising waypoints. You just have to take care to zoom right in when placing waypoints otherwise you can hit adjacent roads or the wrong side of a dual carriageway, though the latter is usually pretty obvious when the route is drawn.

Will create interesting routes (gpx) that can be easily imported into Basecamp.
Sometimes a bit too twisty for me though.

I’m sure there are other options.

I’m a dinosaur with an early RS. A GPS fan who’s progressed through Zumo 550, 660 to NAV6.

Still using stick on GARMINs on 4 wheels, even with 1 car with OEM satnav.

I don’t do sound when riding and don’t miss the jog wheel.

I enjoy route planning on PC and heading off with a full plan for any trip, be it 1 day or 2 weeks.

Sometimes I allow auto-recalc. Sometimes I don’t. Especially when the route has been carefully planned with good reason.

I call it door-to-door riding. I love arriving at a hotel or venue with pinpoint accuracy.

I reckon I’ve fought and won the war with Basecamp and we get along just fine now. You have to learn to be boss.

I only glance at my phone during stops and at the end of the day.

It seems to me that inbuilt (car) SatNavs simply want to to select a destination. End of story.
Phones, similarly. Very difficult to make a complex route.

I have played with connecting a phone to a car, but as that deleted the ability to control the phone via the steering wheel I find it unsatisfactory. But 4 wheel travel is a whole different story.

Anyway - to the thread title. I’ll be stock-piling GPS devices when the writing is finally on the wall and production ends

Yes, @wessie - via microSD card and/or the Android File Transfer app. You place them in the appropriate folder (on device or sd card) and then you can import them to XT. microSD card method also works with Nav 4,5,6.

While I recommend the above, you can also use a explore.garmin.com account and upload via web and then sync to XT via wifi, if you setup your account to XT and Garmin Drive app. It works, but I've found the route import doesn't do what I want from explore cloud; it does with SD import.

If you're talking about iOS devices, if you can get the GPX to your phone/iPad, you can 'share' or 'send' it to the Garmin Drive app, which as to be connected to your XT, and then it'll send via BT upon connection
