Navigation on the TFT, via your phone, is good enough say 75% of the time. For the other 25% I’ll take my Nav V, but that mounting is one ugly bastard. They are not mutually exclusive. It’s good to have the choice.

I couldn't care less if BMW will sell SatNav's in the future or not, but I simply do not believe a phone can replace the GPS. If you put the phone in your pocket, you can't amend the route, can't even zoom in or out, if it's on a holder on the handlebar, it get's far too hot in the sun as I've seen them go completely black. And they are not 100% watertight, can't be handled with normal gloves and most important, they are not built for usage on a motorcycle.

It's just a cheap solution for a problem that doesn't exist.

I use the Nav-6 and Basecamp to plan routes. OK when it's time to head home I turn on auto-recalculation and hit the home button. But for most of my rides out, I'm following a planned route around waypoints using shaping points and this pre-planning means I stick to the good riding roads and don't get lost around towns with confusing traffic redirection schemes, forget which junction to take, etc. My mind often wanders and without the Nav to refer to, I'd be stopping all the time to get a map out.
I'm sure you can make and follow pre-planned routes using the connected app but I don't know how to do that yet.

Yep, and that really works as, in my case, I've loaded the tracks.

My main problems using the app are:
1) reliability of the connection phone <-> TFT<->headset. Sometimes you simply don't know why you've lost connection.
2) recalculation, whenever you encounter a detour, cannot be switched off and you can's check the map without digging up your phone.

Just my thoughts.

WunderLINQ seems to be an appropriate response to the declining Nav6. And for much less dinero, if you're catching my drift....

I have one of these and it works great. Powers from the GPS mount, holds the phone tightly, and has two USB power ports. The NavVI is finding itself relegated to the tail pack more and more often since I picked one of these up.

You don't want to mount your expensive phone rigidly on the handlebars. The vibration will do it no good at all.

The Garmin XT certainly seems have a number of advantages over the Nav VI not the least of which is the wireless interface. The upcoming problem is that Garmin Basecamp is still needed to configure tracks into navigable routes (.gpx files). This application does not run happily on a current Apple MacBook Air configured with the M1 processor. I have experimented with Google Maps as a mapping medium, this can then be imported into Basecamp as a .kmz file to be converted into a navigable .gpx file. BUT.... you still need basecamp to build the files to load into your GPS.

Garmin Basecamp although a creaky old application, especially with Apple desktops/laptops is in my experience the best currently available for planning riding routes. The British Ordnance Survey app is another very good source and will run on smartphones, you can plan routes and share with friends as .gpx files. There is an annual subscription fee of approx £24, this gives you access to all the Ordnance Survey maps in the UK. Not much help if you live outside the UK. It's fantastic for walking/cycling.

Is there another way of producing .gpx files that can be loaded into a Garmin device and excludes the Basecamp barrier? It seems the two are inextricably linked.

Try the MyRoute route planner - very simple to use. I've used it in the past with both Garmin and TomTom devices, though I now use MyRoute's Navigation app on my phone which seamlessly integrates with their route planner. Routes and maps can be downloaded to the phone making you independent of mobile signal coverage.

That sounds interesting, I'll look it up.

Have you played with the OSMaps app. This is available for both Apple and Android devices and I think it may run on a laptop or desktop computer (I've yet to try the computer route yet). For a £24 annual subscription fee all of the OS maps are available. They autoscale from the Landranger size(1 inch to the mile) to the latest 1:25000 scale maps. You can route plan and export/import .gpx files. I've yet to try and download a route produced in this manner to a Garmin GPS unit. The only major drawback is of coarse this is a UK only option.
