What to expect from a future BMW R1250RS

One thing is for sure. Whatever BMW's customers want in a motorcycle is of no concern to Der Corp. You will get whatever features they decide to provide. Unless they start building the boxers in Thailand, they are not going to be cheaper than the current models, either.

I have had bars with lots of adjustment, I used the ones Laverda fitted to the Jota (and others). Funny thing was, once the bars were set up, the adjustment was irrelevant, but the cost and weight remained. Ultimately you get used to a bike and it feels "normal". I have even got used to the stupid "knock kneed" riding position of the CanAm Spyder, so even Old Dogs can learn some things...

I just traded in my old 2008 Honda VFR800 Vtec this summer for the RS and one of the main reasons was the high service cost of adjusting the valves every 24000 km. So I hope BMW doesn’t implement something similar in the future as that will be a dealbreaker for me.

Do you think we’ll ever see a R1250RS? I wouldn’t be at all surprised if BMW quietly dropped the RS from its range for 2020. It doesn’t seem to be selling well and, apart from Euro 4 changes and new colours, they haven’t updated it at all since 2015. I suspect that it doesn’t comfortably fit in one of the established bike categories and that’s probably why we like it. But there does seem to be a limited market for an all rounder. |

On the other hand - it does sel maybe less volume than the GS but then so does every other bike, , the engine and cycle parts are identical to the rest of the range so the investment is minimal and sports tourers are part of the BMW DNA.

I sincerely hope Wessie is correct and that the modular design will give sufficient financial incentive for BMW to maintain the RS in the range, for sure its had a long and sometimes interrupted history in the line-up. As much as I’d like the RS to sell in sufficient numbers to secure its future, perversely I like to ride the “road less traveled” and rather enjoy its limited popularity - it feels more exclusive and in a way gives us a more unique identity as a band of RS riders. Anyway mine is a keeper so I wont be rushing out for an upgrade.........at least that’s the plan. |
