RE: What to expect from a future BMW R1250RS - 3

Hope to see VVT ideally as an option, TFT screen, R1M style slide control and above all a dash which can be switched by the user between metric and imperial (an absolutely unforgivable omission on a sports tourer these days). Keep everything else the same please so I can reuse screens, satnav mount, bar box and Mudslings, luggage etc :)

How about replacing the analogue speedo with a rev counter. Most riders I’ve spoken to set the digital speedo option.

I find it strange the the GS TFT dash isn't used on the RS.

Electronics are pretty much identical between the two, it can't be rocket science to fit the dash to the RS

It will be - its just the BMW way of offering key upgrades on certain models first . RS has no changes for this year - I reckon you will see TFT at IECMA show for 2019 and VVT announced for RT and GS at the same show with RS year after

I think you're right but the RS is the natural bike for the VVT boxer. GS doesn't need more power especial higher up the rev range and neither does the RT in my opinion.

It would also be nice if BMW would stick to all TORX fasteners. My RS has a mix of both TORX and hex-drive fasteners. Since they look a lot alike, sometimes I pick up the wrong tool which can damage the fastener's socket. Or maybe they could paint each type of fastener a different color.

Whether BMW keep the same dash or not one thing the should do is add a function so you can switch between MPH and km/h, it's so bloody annoying that I have to rely on my sat nav.

In some manufacturing plants, there are staff awards for suggestions that lead to greater production or profit.

In BMW Motorad's case, there are undoubtedly awards for making the life of owner's difficult, and compelling visits to their authorised service centres.

Small things, like 16 mm nuts, 7 mm hex bolts. No one else uses them (AFAIK). Impossibly difficult routine maintenance (my R1100 S originally had a wet cell battery - do you want to guess how long it took to check fluid level?)

Overall the RS is less "quirky" than the "S", but it does throw up challenges. For example you need a GS 911 to reset the service reminder. You now need spare parts to adjust valve clearances (although that may be infrequent). You are restricted in the way you can wire in accessories (or you buy a Fuzeblock or the Can Opener all for $$$). You are entirely at the mercy of the little black box and the potential that you will need to have software upgrades that only come to you if you book your bike in for service. Also, if you check closely on your 'bars, you will see that the screws for the clutch and brake reservoirs are actually not the same, one is Torx and the other is a modified type of Torx. I actually have the "bit" to fit, but why did they need to do that? Also, you need to have a GS 911 if your really want to fully bleed your brakes.

How about the TPM? Now, for one, I really like these things. What I don't like is that when the TPM battery fails, the whole unit is to be replaced (suggestions on the 'Net are $160 or so per unit). There are YouTube vids that show how the TPM can be opened up, a common button battery used as a replacement, and the procedure for "re-encasing" the battery using glue from a hot glue gun, but why would it be done that way???

I wasn't born yesterday, and I don't believe that any manufacturer can stay in business unless it makes a profit. It is not really the point that BMW will take every opportunity to achieve a "reasonable" return for its wares, it is just that decisions are made which gives physical, real world imperatives to using the dealer network, instead of relying on the usual persuaders of snobbery, fear of the unknown and belief that the "manufacturer knows best" that is used by most other makers..
I guess it is a balance.

BMW doesn't help. In the UK the RS is listed under the Sports section with the S1000RR - go figure.
I love my RS but its not a Sport bike in my view. They offer panniers for it as all the other Tourers and Roadsters and Adventure bikes. I'd put the XR as a sport bike before the RS

When I went to look at an ex-demo RS being sold by the dealer I got a "much" better deal on a new one which had sat in stock and were very keen to shift so if anyone is looking for an RS they are not as popular and the dealers seem very keen to move them if they can.

I saved about 2K GBP off list

my experience was very similar - it was cheaper to buy a new one than the 6 month old demo bike I test rode. Buying in the next month is always a good time for BMWs in the UK. It is the end of the summer quarter and dealers have very substantial bonuses to shift stock before the end of September as the factory starts to ship the next year's bikes in the autumn to tie in with the major trade shows. My purchase was on the last weekend in Sept 2016.
