The legislators in Texas must like to see riders and their motorcycles cook during hot weather and traffic jams. Plus, they also don't want motorcycle riders to get somewhere before they do: https://www.motorcycle.com/bikes/news/te...itting-44594332

I will be looking elsewhere to live once I retire, that’s for sure. It wasn’t this backward when I moved here 21 years ago for a job.

The thing that bothers me about lane-sharing (or lane-splitting, if you prefer) is not whether it's legal or not...no, what bothers me is that car drivers are increasingly distracted before they even get in their cars, and I seriously doubt most of them are even aware that, for motorcyclists, lane-sharing is a "thing". As a result, whether legal in your area or not, I personally wouldn't want to do it. A lot of folks simply hate motorcyclists and love to screw with them. Those people probably have strictly constrained lives, and the freedom a motorcyclist represents is just too much for their psyche. Opening a door at the wrong time could really mess up a rider's day. People are angry and I don't trust them. |

Legislation has been beefed up in recent years to protect pedestrians, giving them priority to cross roads at side junctions even where it is not a marked crossing. We have lots of campaigns to encourage motorists to give cyclists room when a pass is made. We have nearly 70 million people crammed into a small space so most people are used to driving on congested roads used by many different types of vehicle, or horses! The vast majority of car/van drivers are considerate to other road users and make space to allow bicycles, scooters and motorcycles to get through. I default to consider people I encounter as decent folk until they present evidence to the contrary.

Texas Hill Country is the best, cars and trucks will move to the shoulder (if there's a good shoulder) when they see us catching up from the rear.

This kind of consideration warrants recognition, and my policy is always to wave "thank you!" at the drivers as I move past them. I often wonder...are these folks motorcyclists, who know how hot and dreary it can be, being stuck behind slower traffic? Or are they just plain nice people? There's always that possibility they see a black BMW behind them and think...law officer....but without my panniers on, I doubt it. I'm going with nice people, and fellow riders. |

Relative to lane splitting, I live where 1/2 and 3/4-ton 4WD pick-ups are the most common vehicles. Including the trailer mirrors, they're close to 10-ft wide. However, lane width is 12-ft or, in some cases, less. That doesn't leave much for anything in between.
