Oh, we are, but you can�t fix stupid. A child can understand that being hit by a slow moving vehicle can kill you. A cyclist on a twisting road should know not to ride in a fashion that they are taking up enough space to deny motorists an avenue of escape. People like to think they are special and the laws of physics won�t apply to them.

Motorists have every expectation that they can drive the posted limit without expecting a slow moving obstruction around the next turn. By law, farmers are supposed to be running hazard flashers when moving farm equipment over the public roads. Know how often I�ve seen them do that? Yeah, a big tractor is hard to miss, but the flashing lights let�s a motorist see you from a farther distance.

This may be a generational difference. My generation was taught to look both ways before entering traffic, to not cross against the light, to keep to the side of the road if there�s no sidewalk (we didn�t have bike lanes growing up). It seems we�re raising people to know their �rights� but aren�t educating them their rights don�t trump physics so they need to take care.

Maybe I�m just getting old and crusty, but I�m less sympathetic to people who are victims due more to stupidity than happenstance.

I didn't say this to your original post but I fundamentally disagree as you are expressing a very entitled view that motorists have priority and other road users are "at fault" if things go wrong. You keep mentioning physics but the operator of the physical object moving at speed must have overwhelming responsibility to drive or ride to the conditions. This is perhaps a cultural difference as noted in other posts in this thread. Driving to the posted speed limit without any assessment of other risks is simply asking for trouble. You won't see hazard lights on a slow moving farm vehicle if the corner is blind. You won't see a broken down vehicle if the corner is blind. Just because an urban speed limit is 30mph, it is not always safe to travel at this speed.

Well, if there's any validity to the concept of "survival of the fittest" (mentally and physically), we won't have to wait long to see a meaningful reduction in earth's population. That should open up the roads a bit...

Speaking of "physically", I once noted the proliferation of double-wide chairs in many waiting rooms. I told my wife, "How nice...now a couple can snuggle together while waiting." She replied, "No, sweetheart, that's to accomodate gravity-challenged individuals."

Speaking of "double-wide" chairs: Chairs like that were installed in my local library recently, replacing the original ones that were half the size. These chairs would fit two of me and are so wide and deep that I hardly know how to get in and out of them.

Based on traffic crash data, MC or cars, I'm not seeing a lot of proof that older Americans are significantly better or different drivers than younger drivers. And, how many old farts do you see wearing a helmet? Very few in my part of paradise.

we have the same ageing demographic. Licence holders have to self declare at 70 and then every 3 years that they are fit to drive. The figures from accident reports about drivers who do not meet the sight criteria are shocking. Either becaue they have not had their sight tested or are wearing the wrong glasses.

I believe the Automobile Association has done surveys as well, asking drivers to read a number plate at a set distance (the standard test before a driving/riding test) with a significant failure rate.
