I'll just say that if my motorcycle riding requires me to squeeze between cars, legally or not, it seems counter to the whole idea of riding, which is "freedom of the road". It's difficult to think of crawling through traffic like toothpaste being squeezed from a tube as "freedom". |

Growing up, we were taught to be careful crossing the street because it’s inherently dangerous. Did we bolt out across the road without watching? Yes, but that was our stupidity. Then a couple of kids get hit doing stupid and then they want 15 mph speed limits past every school…and kids still bolt out into traffic…thinking an impact at 15 mph won’t hurt them. So yeah, I watch for cyclists and pedestrians. Around here, more and more are showing consideration for motorists by being aware of oncoming traffic, but the laws of physics always controls. You can mandate motorists to share the road, but that doesn’t replace people using common sense, and some people simply have no sense at all. None of this touches on how many popular roads barely accommodate two cars passing each other and can’t have a dedicated bike lane.

I never knew it was "legal" in the first place to now be outlawed! I know that it has been put on the agenda to make legal for many years without success. A friend once got a ticket for going beside a car to make a right turn, plenty of room to do that at the time. I can't tell you how many times I have done that without a problem. I personally am not too comfortable going between a line of cars to gain advantage, enough wackos out there might take exception. 2023 R1250RS |

It does seem counter productive to stop filtering by bikes. Wonder if that is because the car is king in the US? From what I gather (I have been to the US several times and have friends in Texas) roads are very much designed with the car in mind only, therefore car drivers get prioritised. In many areas folks don’t walk anywhere, is that correct? Residential roads with no pavements (sidewalks). must have a knock on effect to the mindset which leads to things like banning filtering and passing cars. |

Basically, the roof on my sedan is lower than the hood of most recent pick-ups. So, what was the extreme of the design envelope (trucks) is now the typical vehicle, leaving minimal space between. Especially, in the older northeastern and midwestern cities, where lane widths can be less than the 12-ft federal standard. Walking American tourists? You've seen them, they're an unhappy lot. As a rule, Americans don't walk and many live in areas without sidewalks. For one thing, in the US, the property owner has to clear and maintain the sidewalks as a public pathway. Thus, moving to a development of nice new, spacious homes often means you don't have to bother with the expense of maintaining or cleaning a public pathway.

Motorists have every expectation that they can drive the posted limit without expecting a slow moving obstruction around the next turn. By law, farmers are supposed to be running hazard flashers when moving farm equipment over the public roads. Know how often I’ve seen them do that? Yeah, a big tractor is hard to miss, but the flashing lights let’s a motorist see you from a farther distance. This may be a generational difference. My generation was taught to look both ways before entering traffic, to not cross against the light, to keep to the side of the road if there’s no sidewalk (we didn’t have bike lanes growing up). It seems we’re raising people to know their “rights” but aren’t educating them their rights don’t trump physics so they need to take care. Maybe I’m just getting old and crusty, but I’m less sympathetic to people who are victims due more to stupidity than happenstance.
