I have a short update. Thinking about the R1250RS and returning my R1200RS in exchange I asked my dealer whether he or me should contact my warranty assurance whether the corrosion is covered. He told me an inquiry should be sent by him and shortly afterwards I got the information BMW (where the warranty insurance was filed) now will take the costs for the rear drive housing with only 40€ to be paid by me. The other corrosion still waits to be solved though. |

All this is very worrying. I used to have a F800S. This was a very good bike in many ways but had a very bad problem with the engine paint. The writing was obviously on the wall for this as it was beginning to bubble up and come off in sheets all over the place. I sold the bike, partly because of this.

In the UK that is through a tie into 2 or 3 year PCP finance deals. Any rusty bits get changed under warranty and BMW and the original buyers DGAF about what the bike looks like in year 4 onwards. Overall though, I don't think corrosion is as big a problem as some like to make out. Forums don't tend to have many threads with subject lines such as "my 2016 bike has done 20,000 miles and has barely any corrosion." I could start one but there is nothing to moan about so who would be interested? I could also start a similar thread about my 2016 S1000XR... |

That’s great news they will cover the rear drive, that’s filiform corrosion on the rear drive not galvanic as someone said. Is this bike kept outside a lot? |

I've got a 75 Moto Guzzi I am about to start restoring and a bunch of bits will be going for powder coating so will take the stand off and add it to the pile.

It was their demonstrator. The corrosion was evident even at that time but I was lazy and didn't pursue it with them until the beginning of December. Looking on our systems, I can see that technical have advised there’s no manufacturing defect with the corrosion. With this in mind, I’m afraid we wouldn’t look to provide a contribution to your repair costs." Given my own experience and the examples I have read about on this forum I believe there is a quality problem during the manufacturing process of painted parts and have responded to Customer Services accordingly. I'm not holding my breath. This is supposed to be a Premium Product. I'll keep you posted. |

I have the same problem with my center stand cross bar. And my bike rarely sees even rain, much less anything else that would result in corrosion. What I do once a year is to sand down the paint on the cross bar and repaint it with rattle-can black. I think BMW is just using lousy paint on that part. Probably the same sort of paint that I use.
