Won't it be obvious to the retailer if it's a discharge issue, when they test it? Reason I ask is that the battery in question was an 'emergency' purchase made on the day before I left home on tour, necessitating a 1.5-hour round trip (by car, as well!) and probably paying over the odds too - I'd rather not have to do that again only to be told the warranty is void!

Okay, watched the video.

1. I suspect you still have a battery issue (too low a voltage after charging overnight).

2. That dash action is troubling. Find someone with a GS911 or other OBD reader and see what it has to say. Maybe something’s come loose or shorted causing a computer issue. In 7 weeks a rodent could have nibbled on a wire and done damage...it’s a possibility, but an error code needs to be checked out to rule out other issues. At this point, we need to know what the OBD has to say. If the malfunction isn’t current or doesn’t set a permanent warning light until reset, you won’t get a warning on the dash.

Also, I just listened to my bike...there are several whirrs and clicks I don’t hear from your startup. I think several components are not coming online when you power on. Watch your video slowly and note the symbols that appear and color of the warning light. Top 3 most important errors are displayed (not all). I’m attaching the pages from my owners manual, but yours has the same info.

Your issue may be as simple as a harness plug getting fouled or loose.

If it was just the battery, parallel connection of a car battery (+ to +, - to -) would provide abundant amps and voltage to start the bike. If that and substituting the bike battery by attaching directly to the battery wires doesn’t enable you to start normally, something else is also going on.

I’d also check your starter switch. If there was a short or other error, I’d hope an error code would be logged, but you never know. The bike going dark when you try to start is an issue.

I am going to ask a really basic question here, have you checked that the positive lead is firmly connected at the solenoid end?

Since the bike was running flawlessly, then sat for 7 weeks, and now you have this problem........ I don't think something "broke" while the bike was sitting. Not the ECU. Not the connection to the starter. Not a connection to the battery. The symptoms still indicate a battery with zero cranking power under the load of starting. The voltage of a battery under no load is 99% meaningless.

Good to know. I would expect an error code/symbol for a bad battery...not a bunch of unrelated codes.

The battery at that low voltage is completely flat, it should be around 12.7 volts after standing for a few hours from the fully charged state, assuming it’s an age battery, a quick google with show you state of charge graphs and tables, if it’s below 12v then as soon as you put any load on it the voltage will drop substantially in the circuits shutting down the ecu’s giving all the fault codes.

Given the low voltage after charge, I’d start with a new battery

I don't think there's much doubt that the battery is up the creek; my concern is that it's more than that though, because isolating the battery and jumping it to a car battery also doesn't work (see below)

Thanks Wessie, good thought - just tried that but makes no difference. I suppose there is still the point that I'm using domestic-grade jump leads though, which maybe aren't adequate to provide enough power from the car battery on its own?

The BMW-brand German Exide battery that came in my 2009 F650GS only lasted 6 months before dying without warning while I was riding the bike, which required a tow to the dealer who replaced the battery under the bike's warranty.

The exact same thing happened to me a few months later with the original battery of my 2007 R1200R. This time it almost reached the 24-month warranty limit for the battery in the BMW factory bike U.S. warranty agreement. My dealer replaced the battery for free with another BMW Exide unit, which lasted much longer. (Exide warrants their batteries for only 6 months.) That happened while I was visiting my brother at his home and while the bike could be started with a jump from his car battery, the instruments were going crazy and it would not stay running. As soon as we took the jumper cables off, the engine would die. I can only assume that BMW received a batch of defective batteries from Exide which were subject to an internal mechanical short after being exposed to motorcycle usage for a period of time. Since then I have not had any issues with the batteries of any of my BMW motorcycles.
