Zitat von Ray im Beitrag #15 I do the same for my RS after returning for a ride. However I installed a lithium battery on that bike and use a dedicated Optimate lithium battery charger. Once the battery is fully recharged and the green test light starts blinking, which usually takes only a few minutes, I disconnect the charger until I return from the next ride. So far that seems to work fine and I have had no problems. The charger is connected directly to the battery via a set of pigtails directly attached to the bike's battery terminals.

However, I will admit that the RS really has a good alternator and electrical charging system and doesn't need its battery to be recharged after every ride. But I can't say the same thing about my Royal Enfield, 18 year old Yamaha, BMW F650 and of course my Zero. So I just recharge everything after a ride, short or long. It seems to make my batteries last longer.

What happens if you isolate the battery and just use the jump leads from the car to the jump start point and bike frame? |

What my R1250 RS manual says on page 191 is as follows: If you are unable to charge the battery through the on-board socket, you may be using a charger that is not compatible with your motorcycle's electronics. If this happens, disconnect the battery from the on-board systems and connect the charger directly to the battery. I've highlighted the key point, which is that you are supposed to disconnect the battery from the bike before charging it directly, which is exactly what I pointed out. Furthermore there is also a warning as follows on page 190: Attention - Charging the battery that is connected to the vehicle via the battery terminals. Damage to the on-board electronics. Disconnect the battery at the battery terminals before charging.

That your battery reads under 12v is problematic for me. How does it read after a night on a trickle charger?

I don't think you have a serious problem. I think you have a bad battery.

I would think a charger would have to have a very high current output capability to maintain an excessively high voltage across a healthy battery, but perhaps if the battery or its connection posts were damaged and the battery not accepting charge, it could result in a poor quality or faulty charger applying a high enough voltage to fry the bike's ECU and other electronics. If you are going to connect some random electrical device directly to your connected battery, and therefore directly to the bike's systems, I guess it's a question of how lucky do you feel! Fred |
