So I have my new tyre fitted to the loose rear wheel! Do I need to put anything on the wheel bolts (lock n' seal' or such like?) prior to refitting or just put the bolts back as they are and torque??..... Thanks!

Bolts are installed "dry"- no lube or loctite.

On the old forum I posted a photo of a little tool I made to make fitting the rear wheel easier. I took an 8mm bolt with the right thread (I think it is 1.25 but I would have to check), cut off its head and cut a slot to accept a screw driver.

The rear wheel had no lip or any locating device, so the altered bolt is put in finger tight, the wheel hung off it while one or more of the other bolts are fitted, and then it is removed (obviously). It saves having a third hand.

This sounds like a nice tool for me to make. Maybe I will remove one of the lug bolts and go down to my local fastener store and get plain steel bolt to use as a basis. Watch for the video.

Take bolt.

Cut head off.

Insert in any one of 5 hub holes.

Hang wheel on stud.

Insert 4 more wheel bolts.

Remove headless bolt.

Insert 5th and final wheel bolt.

Torque up as required. Use torque wrench or at least 1 big grunt when using a small wrench / spanner / key.

I will confess that the first bolt I used is a bit sub-optimal in the length department.

(Where have I heard that 1 before)

So I am on the lookout for a longer one to make the joke even easier.

Now, now..., let's have some respect for an engineer who have been video ambassador and translator for a large group of followers (and some fawning sycophants), who have become better owners due to his effort at entertainment. GG understands that not every BMW owner is more than 60 years old with more than 50 years of riding and wrenching behind him or her. There's a lot of novices out there that need his help, encouragement, and videos that don't edit out the occasional and REALLY stupid mistake.... No really, we love ya' GG.

I have gotten requests for a video or two of what may be to some the most mundane of tasks, so there are people out there who appreciate the videos. Besides, it is surprising how the most basic and straightforward of tasks can take a weird and unexpected turn, and it is that which likely provides the best value to the viewer.

A 40mm long, 8mm socket (allen) head set screw might be the way to go. First of all, you don't have to decapitate an innocent bolt (the hack saw or angle grinder can stay in the drawer and you don't have to worry about boogering the threads in the vise) and, secondly, you have an existing means of unscrewing your handy tool.

True, but the question is, how long will it take to find it and with the threads needed. Sounds like it would be a specialty item. It is definitely more elegant and likely more costly too.
