Warranty stuff » Corrosion problems

Has anyone else experienced corrosion problems?
I purchased my RS1200 SE in March 2017, last winter I noticed a few problems with finish on my bike.
My down pipes are completely corroded/rusty, the grab rail powder coating has flaked off in 2 places, some of the fixing bolts are rusted!
I reported this when having a service at Cannon Motorcycles in Braintree.
One of their people said I had cleaned the bike with something corrosive, I asked why wasn't all the bolts and other items corroded as well he couldn't answer me but still gave his opinion to BMW headquarters.
BMW then said he was right despite not looking at the bike and reused to replace the faulty items.
I am now taking them to court so I just wondered if anyone else has had these sort of problems, I'd be glad to know!

I had an issue with corrosion on my 2016 model. My supplying dealer said it was neglect,It had stood dirty for two days over Christmas 2016.
Cut a long story short,I switched dealers and they replaced it no problems.

A year ago I noticed corrosion on the bevel filler/level plug and also the finish peeling off the rear rack mounting arms. Although my bike gets used and my dealer has seen it looking filthy, it also gets cleaned thoroughly and regularly, so when I pointed this out, they contacted BMW and replaced the rack arms under warranty.
In the last month, I noticed finish missing off the throttle body on one side and again flagged it when the bike went in for service. While the bike was on the bench, they identified some other areas of concern with corrosion on engine casings and final drive as well, all of which was reported to BMW. I've just been offered a replacement engine and drive train under warranty to address these issues if i am prepared to contribute a relatively small sum towards labour. The bike is booked in for the new year to get the work done.

Having had an issue with a new Triumph 20 years ago and been messed around by my local dealer and Triumph, the issue was then fixed under warranty by another dealer.

My conclusion from all of this is that you need a good dealer and a decent relationship with them as they are the interface to the manufacturer in all of this on your behalf. As ever you pay your money and take your choice, but maybe it's worth travelling a bit to deal with the right people?
I'm lucky, Lloyd Motorrad in Carlisle are excellent.

Good advice on the dealer relationship a good one will want you back for another bite of the show room floor cherry. My tip is ACF 50 applied by brush rag and pump up pressure gun after each wash.

I mentioned my corroding centrestand to the dealer a couple of weeks ago when it was in for it's 6K service. His reply was, "they all do that, give it some fresh paint"!

I questioned if he would be happy if it was his 12 month old bike that he had spend his own money on and he said, "doesn't matter, BMW wont replace it so what I think is irrelevent".

Guess where my cash won't be going for the next service and definitely not the next bike (if it's a BMW)?

Same here, Ocean bmw, they assisted with a warranty claim, new stand. Never had any problem in any warranty, bike, coat, planners, accessories etc. since buying my first bmw in 2005.

Was going to raise it again tomorrow when I had the 1250 but that is now cancelled so will give them a shout and also ask if they charged me for the over filled oil

But BMW will replace the centre stand! When I reported corrosion on mine and said I wanted it changed the dealer took photos of the stand and sent them off to BMW who authorised a replacement under warranty. I'd go back to your dealer and bend their ears a little!

I'm guessing that replacement stands corrode just like the original?

I reported my stand ahead of the final 2 year warranty but BMW (Pidcock’s) in Derby said BMW would not accept it. They did replace misting clocks and had previously replaced corroding pannier rails.
Recently I showed them corrosion on the petrol cap, they took photos and reported to BMW, who declined the claim, however Pidcock are still trying to get some goodwill contribution - so to their credit they are not giving up too easily.
For the record, I keep the bike very clean, so its certainly not any abuse from my side.
