E10 has been evaluated by Dave Searle of Motorcycle Consumer News here in the US. Their conclusion was that the E10 produced a 4% leaner mixture...E15 produced a 6% leaner mix.

The results of Consumer Report are right on..correct.

However, there should be a decernable difference between and ending designed for higher Octane (higher self ignition temp/ hight compression) vs an engine design with lower compression at the upper edges of the engine performance envelop. Normal driving it is unlikely that any difference will be seen. The modern engine ECU adjusts parameters to some what correct for the differences and most ofter normal driving does not load the engine enough to need the higher self ignition temp. The difference will be seen at the upper end of the engine performance curves...The New F750(regular gas) vs the F850 ( high Octane gas) hp curves show this precisely.

So you would only feel the difference if you wind out the engine to it's upper RPM range under load...typical racing operation.

The only thing that I have to add is the few times I was able to find E0 premium fuel when riding outside California on my 2007 R1200R, my gas mileage increased by 10%, riding at the same speed on the same highway. Since owning my RS, I have yet to see a gas station offering E0, not even the ones that used to do so in Oregon 10 years ago. The corn farmers are winning this war.

I did notice a performance difference between regular 87 and premium 91. My top speed was down about 13 mph during a trip this past spring to Big Bend.

Limecreek, can you repeat your experiment using 91 to see if the 13 mph loss in top end was restored? It is a pretty major drop...

I'm not going to argue anybody's math, but this is fact:
Using 89 to 93 octane with 10% ethanol my bike get 47-49mpg.
Using 91-93 ethanol free fuel it gets 54-57mpg.
Motor "seems" to run smoother but that is just my impression.

Since E-10 is the most common fuel in this area, I used it as the base and the non-oxy as the improvement.
This returns a percentage increase of just over 10% minimum to a maximum of just over 25.5%.

So which is real? The math that can be manipulated or the real world "observations" that are in fact real?

We certainly don't want government regulators to hear about this. They will think that every motorcycle engine will be able to use E20. I can hardly wait for Euro 5 if that happens.

I don't like using 10% ethanol in our bikes and use 91 AKI without ethanol at home. Mainly because I don't like the bikes sitting for long periods with ethanol in the tank.

On trips I don't have much choice, I take what I can get.
Some tanks are 91 AKI without ethanol, some tanks with 89 AKI with ethanol.
I usually don't see a consistent change in mileage between the two types of gas.
There's too many variables to consider, like bike speed, wind speed and direction or percent grade of the road.
Even if I'm riding at the same speed, my rate of acceleration when leaving a stop or passing can be different.

Debbie's bike usually takes the same amount of gas as mine, but sometime hers will take more. At those times I'm guessing she was using lower gears, accelerating harder, or maybe I filled the tanks slightly different.
