Right on, Keith. Bikes that are on the extreme side of lean from the factory will run smoother with non ethanol fuel. Can't say my RS is so sensitive, though some others are. Not to mention my old '92 900SS carby, which definitely runs better with ethanol free. On that note, you can download the Pure Gas app to direct you to ethanol free stations (hopefully) close to you

It was a big issue in the US Motorcycle world in the run-up to 2016. Lots of chest pounding and "technical" declarations on near and long-term engine impacts. All of which I never saw in several decades of burning E10 in "daily drivers" that ranged in age up to 23-years old.

Well, in any case, a magic wand was waved in late 2016 and the dreams of the anti-ethanol legions got their "dream team" to run all aspects of the government. And, 2-yrs later, we still have enthanol, plus 12 billion in additional direct cash payments to corn and soybean farmers and 25%, or more, increases in steel and aluminum prices.

Sometimes, these burning issues like ethanol are just fake issues for organizations that want to increase membership or win the next election.

Ah, the wonderful world of politics, lol.

Regarding this subject: Everyone's favorite magazine Consumer Reports in their September issue, at the top of page 15, has a "Money-Saver" sidebar titled "Premium Gas". They say that they tested a 2015 Acura TLX and a 2016 Nissan Maxima V6 on both premium and regular fuel. CR found that there was is no difference in vehicle performance between using the different fuels. They say that manufacturers will sometimes "recommend" using a "premium" fuel but not "require" doing so. Their vehicle experts say that if premium is just recommended and not "required" they they suggest that you use regular fuel to save money.

#13......here’s the problem Wessie, who really knows the truth? I suspect we have a sliding scale of qualities, related to both the RON and additives so its likely not as simple as selecting either supermarket or over-hyped brands. Maybe Tesco’s product is as good as the super-duper fuels, hard to know - most likely they are produced in the same refineries.

In my 1981 R100RS I use standard premium unleaded and add some Redex occasionally to “clean” the combustion chamber - but still its an issue to start the engine if its been standing for some weeks/months (its currently off the road and SORN) so I plan to refill with a super unleaded before winter.

do you think the R100RS starting is just the fuel going off in the tank? Keeping the Bing carburetors clean would be the most important thing. Part of the problem with modern fuels is the gunge left when the actual petrol evaporates due to the additives. This leaves a nasty coating on carb parts I believe, which can cause problems. Fuel injection systems cope better with being left as they are not relying on gravity to feed the fuel to the cylinders.

Carburetors? I think I can remember the things. Surely, some mechanic in the darkest reaches of the Amazon would know how fix one of the arcane devices. Perhaps, an offering of a dead chicken, or two, will help cure the problem.

I do not know what is the definition of 'premium' and 'super' unleaded, but I dare to say, that during my trip to Spain and Portugal I could definitely tell the difference between different brands and products. I was filling up at least 2 times a day, usually 3. I ended up looking systematically for Repsol. It was the first time I was dealing with E5 and E10 fuel and I was really feeling sorry for my bike.

No doubt. I am sure those riders never had that sort of issue. The vibrations from a big single were all they needed to keep them happy.

Carburettors? Oh yes. Idle air screw, throttle valve cut-away, retaining clip positions on the needle, main jet selection, leaking float valves, leaking floats, torn diaphragms not to mention synchronizing them.
In a high end clothing shop at the local shopping centre, a BSA 650 (single carb) is on display as a prop. It has some "go fast" bits. A scoop and ventilation holes in the front brake and a non-standard (possibly Italian) upper triple clamp. The BSA was a "non-unit" version, and from memory, the generator / magneto / fine product of Joseph Lucas sits under the carb.
Of course, the English did not use a choke, or an "enriching" circuit; they used a tickler. This was a small plunger that depressed the floats and caused the fuel to flood, making a rich mixture for starting.
It also spilled the fuel down, onto the electrics. Raw fuel, predictable sparks, impromptu barbeque.
Oh, those were the days....

I don't notice a difference using higher octane, but I do notice a difference using non-oxygenated.
Around 10% better mileage.
