Hi all,

Have just signed up so thought I ought to say hello.

I've been riding for about 40 years so am an "old git" and having recently test ridden an RS (as well as lots of others) am pretty much settling on this to add to the stable.

I have owned many bikes other the years but the last 15 years have all been European brands and currently have a 998S Ducati, an Aprilia Tuono (V-twin but with 1060 connversion), an F800ST which is my 90 mile a day commuting bike and a Moto Guzzi 850T that I have recently imported from Canada for restoration.

I am looking for a bike to do distance work with a pillion that is still fun to ride and currently the RS is ticking all the boxes so going to talk pound notes to a dealer this weekend
If anyone knows of any good deals to be had in the UK please free to shout.

If you choose the RS I don't think you'll be disappointed, go for the SE.

Welcome Fuggers, I hope you find a good deal out there. The RS is a lovely bike and really fits the gap between a pure tourer and a single minded sports bike, lovely usable power, great handling and capability for 2-up touring with practical and secure hard luggage.
Lots of tips on here for protecting a new bike and repositioning the satnav (eg Hornig kit) to make it even better.

I bet you are going to miss your chain maintenance and wheel alignment rituals.

Fear not, I still have the Tuono for the chain scrubbing and the alignment eye-test

Yes, had a chat with David and test ride from there but the GS wasn't available for back to back testing so doing that on the 4th just to cover all the bases. We rode the XR but I took it back after 10 miles, hated the bvibration and noise (I really am not a 4 cylinder person).

Having ridden pretty much all the adventure style bikes I absolutely loved the RS, my wife likes the elevated pillion position of the adventure bikes but says I have the final say as I will be doing the bulk of the mileage so I am pretty much sold on the RS but will ride the GS before doing the deal just for completeness.

Whereabouts are you in Cambridgeshire, I am in Benwick, about 18 miles from Peter-bog-horror?

45 Euro 🙈- that’s 2 tank fulls of fuel, so nearly 400 miles of fun. No wonder you declined the option of the steam train.

I'm just outside St Neots. I know Benwick (I travel all over for work).

Are you back-to-back testing on the 4th? If not, I hope you aren't too smitten by the GS. I know what you mean about the more upright position, but the GS just doesn't do it for me personally. I see it as the bike equivalent of a Range Rover Discovery: looks like it could travel across the wilderness on dirt tracks, but it's never *ever* going to be taken off-road in reality. Tastes differ, however. (Plus GS's are as common as dirt, these days )

The RS ticks all the boxes for me: it handles long distance high mileage days, and once you're at your destination, you have a very well equipped toy to terrorise the tarmac with

Hi Paul,

St. Neots. I work in Kempston so have a good commute from Benwick which is mainly done on my trusty F800ST.

The GS is the last bike on our list to ride but having ridden pretty much all of the other Adventure bikes, my wife loves the elevated riding position but I am not keen on the top heavy feeling and less connected front wheel feel.

However, in breaking news I popped into Wolaston Northampton on my way cross country to Bristol on Friday afternoon as they are selling off their low mileage, mint R1200RS. Mint is is but was also a bit pricey so I asked if there were any deals on a new one. Well they have one new Sport SE with keyless and alarm in stock that they are keen to find a new home for, so we talked a bit and he got a bit keener and ended up offering me a price I couldn't refuse!

So I am picking it up on Sept' 1st and having it serviced on the 8th and off to the Bol d'Or in the South of France on the 12th.

I'm really looking forward to September

Nice one Fuggers, I hope you enjoy her as much as I do mine. Now get an Avantguard and mudsling fitted before that trip, most other add-ons can wait but these protective elements are best fitted from new.
