Tuning and modding » Disassembling the BMW top-box plate question

Hi all, quick question as I'm getting around to fiddling with bike attachments;

My bike came with (OEM-BMW) topbox plate installed when delivered, as I'm yet to procure it and honestly not in too much rush before April-May which would allow a tour a tankbag can't cover I was considering removing it while still getting used to new bike leg-over height and save some shins. Also a little bit from the aesthetics angle.

When looking at online pictures the rear pillion bars seem open-ended and as a completely separate tail assembly. By looking at it even if I just unscrew the plastic 'plate' the read would still have protruding extensions and plate holders. And if I remove the entire assembly it would leave a hole on the tail...

Basically I'm asking if these are considered separate part(s) by BMW and I would need to buy the rear without the plate in mind to get the look from one of the photos while the top box is not used?

I have never noticed the rear luggage rack getting in the way when getting on or off the bike.
If you remove the rack you'll probably need to buy the grab handle to cover the holes.

I have seen pictures of the RS or R without grab handles but I don't know how they got a finished look.

In the US the grab handle cost $500

(Less wrenching and more riding.)

Hopefully, the excellent performance of the national team will generally warm the Croatia and allow some riding time and get your mind off the aesthetics of the appearance and onto the aesthetics of the performance of the bike.

The top box rack is one piece of cast aluminum where the regular grab rails are two pieces. You can't just remove that grey plastic plate.

I don't have a top box, but I like the rear rack as a place to hold a Kriega bag

Ditto. It may be cheaper to buy the cosmetic kit to hide the holes if you want to remove the rack, but I don’t find top cases that big an issue. I pretty much use my arms to lift my leg so it will go over…I’m not as spry as I once was. I know some people say if you learn to mount by putting your left foot on the left foot peg, you are standing high enough to easily get the right leg over the saddle.
