Being a fan of Arai is a lot like being a fan of Snell, it can be limiting. Modulars (flip-ups) and internal visors are great, but those features mean structural design compromises must be made which either limit impact load capacity or elevate deceleration (G loads) levels. The chin bars on modulars will require a robust hinge mechanism to absorb impact loads like a full-face helmet. Similarly, the EPS liner thickness lost to the drop-down visor system, means the liner must be stiffer (higher G loads) for a given impact load. Old Forum Orphan |

I am a fan of the Shoei Neotec (with a v2 in waiting) as I like a flip so, yes, you compromise with additional weight and noise was well as some impact protection. The compromise is worth it for the convenience of the flip and sun visor. At low speeds such as when dawdling at 20mph admiring Alpine views you can ride with the visor down and the chin bar up which is more pleasant when it is 35C.

Hopefully, Snell will finalize their rotational impact testing protocols within the year and we can get some third-party test results to verify the benefits of the MIPS type systems, Shoei's slip liner (RF-1400) or Arai's rounded shape design philosophy.

Surprised there’s no mention of the differences in the “Arai head” vs the “Shoei head”. Wore Shoeis for years and disliked them because of the pressure point on my forehead. Switched to an Arai Signet and never looked back. It’s my understanding all Shoeis fit the same type of head? |

Come the mid 2000s I needed a new helmet and found the cheaper Arais no longer fitted properly. I ended up with a Shoei Raid 2 after trying several makes. Since then I have been with Shoei but sometimes I have to change cheek pads to get a better fit, although a Neotec XL out of the box fits fine. Based on my experience, is there a consistent Arai shape or does it vary with model?

But poor ventilation. Tried an Arai, but shell had changed and did not fit me. This year took a gamble buying a Shoei mail order without trying it on. Another excellent helmet with better ventilation on top of being comfortable. The best helmet is the one that fits. And can be worn all day without thinking about being uncomfortable.
