I've planned a route for early July with my brother, riding a long slog up the motorway to Arnside on Day 1, a run through the middle of the Lake District and half the SWC 300 on day 2 (staying at Ayr), the rest of the SWC300, part of the Yorkshire Dales and North Yorks Moors on Day 3 (staying in Castle Howard), and then back home on day 4.



Trip is planned in MyRouteApp. Am wondering whether the stages could be too long - any thoughts / suggestions / comments welcome?

Members have commented on good roads/hotels but you asked whether the stages are too long. My approach is to plan the route and then break it down into the number of hours you feel comfortable riding each day and this will be different for all of us. My preference is 6 to 7 hour days. but you also need to consider those you are riding with-what can they manage. You will then have to adjust this to suit your hotels. Also a solo rider will cover more miles than a group so the larger the group the slower you will be. Too often people quote miles covered in a day and this can be totally misleading so best avoided.

No worries. Your general comment about local roads around here being clogged are justified. It is possible to pick some good routes through on backroads (EG Rivington to Blackburn across the tops) but difficult to avoid getting snarled up or on motorway before and/or after.

I aim for 6 hours in the saddle plus a one hour proper break for lunch when riding solo and alone. That also fits in with the fuel tank range of the RS. I prefer to do no more than 350 miles per day. That just about fits with my preferred 6 hours.

Hey OlieL Since my trip to Ireland was cancelled I am doing something similar with a friend in June. We are setting off from Essex to Shrewsbury on 16th June. Circle around north Wales on 17th and back to Shrewsbury.Up to Tallentire North Lake District on 18th.Up to Dumfries on 19th for two days around the SWC. We will then head back via the Peak District, overnight stop at Hathersage on 21st. Probably about 175-200 miles max per day. Will try to avoid motorways as far as possible but may use them for the first and last legs.We don't have a firm plan on Wales and Scotland but there are a number of great roads to explore, many of them covered in the various bike magazines.
