accessories » Installing key cylinder on 30L top box

If this is covered somewhere on the forum and I missed it I apologize. I ordered the 30L top box for my bike, P/N 77438543246. I also bought what they call a repair lock cylinder, P/N 51257698204. I have found some excellent videos on keying the cylinder to my key and that looks straight forward. I have also seen some warnings about making sure you install the cylinder correctly. What I haven't found are instructions on what the "correct" way looks like. Has anyone done it? Is is as simple as depressing the locking tab with a thin screw driver while sliding it in? Is there and up or down I need to worry about? Does anyone know of a video out there that I just haven't found yet? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the information. I figured it couldn't be too difficult. Funny how different Honda is from BMW. When I got the bags for my 2014 the keying instructions were included with the lock cylinder and they were pretty much idiot proof. Same when I bought the quick shifter for it. All the instructions for installing all their accessories were readily available on line. BMW seems to be pretty tight lipped about a lot of things, largely discouraging do it yourself.

I've looked at that post and it was very detailed. I don't think I'll have any problem keying the cylinder. I've seen that covered multiple places and well. I was looking for information on correctly installing the keyed cylinder as I've heard getting it out is not easy if you screw up.

All the parts are new so I can't take a picture of an original install. I'll be doing that.

While I can't say so for sure, it's still on it's way here from California, I doubt it. I bought the box, outer shell, back rest, badge, outer shell screws and repair lock cylinder as line items. My understanding is I have to key it to my key and assemble everthing.

The box arrived yesterday. I had to drill two holes (pre-dimpled) in the top cover to mount the back rest. I had to attach the cover to the main box with six screws. I had to key the cylinder which didn't even take 5 minutes. There are some very good videos about this.

I called the dealer I bought it from before inserting the cylinder. He said, "make very sure you don't have a plate in the second to the last slot from the key insertion face or you'll never get the key out." The keying directions where clear about that, even if they didn't give the reason. As far as aligning the keeper on the cylinder, up is the simple answer. His answer was, look at the open barrel where the cylinder goes. You will note that one of the four corner tabs in the hole is ramped. I needed a flash light to see it but it's clearly there. On the 30L top box it's the one on the upper right hand corner. Align the tab with that, insert the cylinder all the way, turn the key and you're done.

Last I peeled the backing off the sticky stuff on the badge and pressed it in place on the colored top cover. Fit check the bag and done. Now I have to put the bag under the tree until Christmas.
