RE: GPS Re-location - 2

I knocked this mount up in my workshop from some scrap I had lying about. It now carries a Nav 5 with no fouling issues on the the reservoirs. It gives a clear view of the SatNav and doesn't have the unsightly 'arms' that the Hornig mount has.

Hi All I got the horning bracket and had the same trouble with the bar raisers but then I got a nice cheap one from China that raised and moved the bars back a bit and now the handle bars do not touch the GPS on either side. have clocked up 27000km on the bike with the horning bracket and have no troubles with it, nice and easy to install and looks good.

I use the Hornig Mount, also. My bike is equipped with Helibars risers and an MRA tinted Touring screen. There is no fouling of the bars and ample room to adjust the angle of the nav unit. The GPS is fully shielded by the screen even when it is mounted in the lowest position possible.

Adam, I think you have something with the Nav mount. Exactly my plans as well. Curious, what is the red bike in the background? First glance was an old trials bike but the pipe is confusing.

The bike in the background is a Fantic 300 with Fantic 200 tank fitted. This was to preserve the very hard to find original bodywork as the bike is dunked in streams and thrown at rocks most weekends over the winter The Satnav mount was an amalgamation of ideas I'd seen on various forums and was easy to make. Apart from using my lathe to countersink the bar (and fit rubber grommets) to fit over the screen pivots, the rest can be made with basic hand tools. I did consider using the Tig to fit the mount plate to the bar, but drilling and tapping was less mither. Maybe, if I get around to making a MK2, then I'll do that, and mill some extensions to fit under the screen arms instead of the long Allen cap heads (which are covered in a bit of 4mm clear fuel pipe to protect the paint) - but at the moment it works fine and keeps the Nav5 down under the screen to protect it from the elements. With careful positioning, it clears the master cylinders too, and is just under your eye line. The idea wasn't really mine, I just adapted it to steer away from the problems I saw with other mounts , and it looks a bit more 'Factory'. 'Monkey see, monkey do!'

PS If you want a couple of spare stainless 'E' clips that locate the screen arms, I'll post you a couple - I bought a big bag of them for next to nothing. I dare say, BMW will want you to bend over with their prices

Fits in existing screw holes. Can be mounted without drilling, cutting etc.

I have this one on my bike with the MRA variable and 1 inch bar risers ( not moving back ).

My sat nav is just off centre and it can just clear the brake reservoirs after a little bending, but just touched screen when screen is at lowest position, to solve this I have a clear tank protector sticker on screen to stop it marking it.

We’re turning the clock back here, but here’s my old solution.

For one who does not use a tank bag and uses a cut down screen, I do not need my GPS mounted above the dashboard.

So a slight jack-up to place the Zumo higher than standard, but below the dash suffices.

For a few pennies, you cut 2 small steel strips of appropriate length, around 75mm to suit your height.

1 flat and 1 “angle iron” to give lateral stability.

Hey presto. A new mount for pennies.

This is how I relocated my Navigator VI, extremely simple and very cheap, cost me less than €6 and best of all, I now see the beautiful BMW badge on the handlebar

I went to the local hardware store (Bauhaus) and bought an 1 meter aluminum pipe with an inside ø of 10mm and outside ø of 12mm. I then cut a 125mm long piece of the pipe (the exact distance between the two locking washers for the pivot bracket of the windscreen) I then used a small round file and enlarged the inside diameter just ever so slightly, so that the pipe fit snugly on the small pieces that stick out on the pivot bracket. Once the pipe was fitted between the brackets I just moved the Navigator mount from the steel pipe on the handlebar to the new pipe above, it just happened to be that the diameter of the aluminum pipe was exactly the same as the original steel pipe on the handle bar. Only make sure you position it so that you can slide the locking tab on the Navigator holder all the way to the left otherwise you will not be able to remove the unit. I also had a few plastic cover laying around that I cut off and attached to the original Navigator bolts on the handlebar with double adhesive tape so that it looks a little better. Finally I took a cable tie and strapped the Navigator cable to the pipe as well, not that I think it is needed but now I now it is secure. I did not have to cut the cable or anything like that, the cable is long enough to be routed behind the instrument cluster, up and over the aluminum pipe.

There are however a few concerns with this location.

1) You can not move the windscreen up and down as the aluminum pipe is very tightly attached to the pivot bracket and moving the windscreen will pivot the GPS. For me this is not an issue as I ride with the windscreen in the upper position all the time.

2) Over time the friction between the aluminum pipe and the pivot bracket may loosen and cause the Navigator to rotate, if that happens I'll deal with it at that point in time. Since I bought a 1 meter pipe I can always just cut another 125mm piece and replace the old one.

3) The analog speedometer is not 100% visible, as you see in the photos I only see it up to 140 km/h, but with the new location for the Navigator I can always have the speed shown on that one instead.

4) You may need to have handle bar risers that move the handle bar closer to you (Helibars) right now I can turn the handle bar all the way to the left or right and not hit the Navigator , but I'm not sure if you can do the same if you have the handle bars in the stock location?

Now I'm ready to go on my first vacation on Saturday

If you're using the OEM bracket and Hornig they should be able to sell you an additional spacer which solves the fouling issue, check the website it has info about the spacer on the mount page.

A couple of photos of the Hornig unit on my ‘16 RS. Other modifications that may matter: Helibars, MRA T screen, NAV5, and a Wunderlich GPS shade. After these photos were taken I added plain Torx fasteners from a non-GPS equipped RS to fasten down the handlebars. It provides a much improved view without blocking the bike’s instruments and looks factory-installed.

Tjena XIII - I think you achieved a great result with an aluminium tube, but the compromises to analogue speedo and inability to adjust the screen are a step too far for me. I have the Hornig mount same as Blackshirt and can confirm that you do not need bar risers to achieve adequate clearance from the stock screen, however you do need to rotate the brake & clutch levers marginally to avoid master cylinders (left side only but better to have both angled the same) fouling on GPS.
Finally, Blackshirt, why not route the GPS cable behind the clocks to make the finish a little neater, you just need to release it from the rubber cable tie - 30 seconds of a job and it looks great!
