Hi Everyone -

I apologize upfront if this is the wrong place to post this question. I just got my new 2020 R1250RS here in the US. I wanted to install Battery Tender leads to the bike battery so I can keep the bike on charge during periods of not riding it. I know I need to disconnect the Neg terminal, then the Pos terminal on the battery first, install the leads, then in reverse order reconnect the battery. That part is straight forward.

What I am wondering though, if I disconnect the battery for anytime from the bike, do I then need to get the bike reprogrammed just to get the bike to start again? Or does the bike have a certain amount of "memory" before that becomes an issue. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

I had no battery on my bike for 4 days whilst waiting for a replacement.
No issues when re-installed.
You should be okay.

I'm surprised the bike did not loose the time and date after 4 days.
Do you have a BMW Navigator mounted?
The BMW Navigator will reset the bike time and date when turned on.

It'll be fine with no battery connected; no reprogramming needed to get it running again.

I don't know about the 1250 but the 1200s have an extra "post" which is a positive battery connection; it should have a red plastic cover on it.

It makes adding bits and bobs much easier.

My bike came with a lead along the right side fairing and frame. Pretty much right where my right knee would be.

You have to be careful when setting time loose, you can lose an awful lot of it chasing it down again.

Yes, the R1250RS does have the extra post with red cap! I wasn�t sure about using that, I�m you mentioned that.

Now the 1250RS also has a factory 12v accessory outlet on the right side of the bike below the pillon.

Couldn't I just use that connected to a battery tender instead of installing a battery tender pigtail to the bike?

the accessory socket is controlled by the canbus and switched off about 1 minute after you power off the bike - you need a "canbus enabled" charger to use the accessory socket. BMW will sell you one but the Optimate 4 also does the job. These chargers can wake up the socket to enable charging.

If you already have a charger that is not canbus compatible then just use your fly lead. You will find this is handy anyway as it can be used to power heated clothing or a tyre compressor which might exceed the 5 amp limit of the accessory socket.
