Recently my KEY FOB has been acting weird (Could be because it got washed out while doing laundry). I have to keep changing the battery of the FOB every week. Hence I have started using the plastic emergency key for my everyday commute. But now I am thinking to replace my Key FOB and get a new replacement. What are my options?? Do I have to go to BMW dealer or any other key maker can do it? How much will it cost? |

First try the rice trick they suggest for wet cell phones. You may just have moisture to remove that’s causing trouble,

Well, I doubt getting wet would ruin the electronics...not at the voltage of the coin battery. You'd have to find a way to open it up and inspect the board. If water damaged it, then it's toast. If not, see if someone who knows something about circuit boards can see if there's any reason it isn't working with a fresh battery after it's completely dry.

Hardly a day goes by when I'm not glad that I didn't go for the so called 'keyless' option. I can't think of a better example of fixing a non existant problem and creating a whole host of other problems in the process. Mind you, I'll probably get RSI from turning that key through 30 degrees! |

I don’t mind the keyless option, but I do agree that BMW could have designed a better fob. My Prius fob is thinner and does more, although I’ve not tried running it through the wash.

As I had the cover off I noticed there are 2 small Torx screws that I assume these hold the rest of the assembly together. I would undo these and see if I could get the thing disassembled enough to expose the electronics. Then I would soak the thing in some isopropyl alcohol or other switch cleaner spray. You may have some detergent residue lurking inside that is providing a conductive path to drain the battery. If you see any residue give it a rub with a cotton bud. Try not to zap anything with static electricity - wear a wrist band clipped to earth if you have one or do the work on a steel kitchen sink and keep a body part in contact with the sink (beer belly is ideal which frees up your hands). Let the solvent evaporate fully before reassembly. |

I thought keyless ride was a solution to a problem that didn’t exist... until I got a bike that has it. Brilliant, change the battery regularly and don’t put it through the washing machine. 😁 |
