Electronics » Keyless ride: using the 'emergency' key

Out of interest, today for the first time I decided I'd try out the plastic emergency key which allegedly contains the electronic gubbins needed to fire up a 'keyless ride' bike in the event of the fob battery going flat.

The instruction manual says you need to stick the key in the slot between the front and back seats, where it will apparently be close to the bike's aerial. Did that, but it didn't work. Hmm. Am I missing something here or is mine just faulty? (the plastic blade of the emergency key is correctly keyed physical ly, for what it's worth)

I was told that I would need to stick the emergency key on the sensor under the rear seat. But when I tried to open up the seat using the plastic key all it did was to bend and seemed like it would break the key before turning the seat lock. So I gave up, bought a steel key that will open the seat, and never really tried to start the bike using the emergency key. Perhaps one of these days I should give it a try.

I tested mine a few months ago, first trying between the seats with no luck. I removed the rear seat with the plastic key (very carefully because the plastic key is not up to that task) and placed it over the spot per the manual. Started the bike with no problem. I like Richard’s idea of getting a metal key made and I’ll just keep the two of those fastened together.

Thanks all: have now tried using the emergency key everywhere around that area, including via the wheel arch, but it's absolutely not playing ball. Back to the dealership then... anyway, at least it's good to find this out now rather than in an emergency situation I suppose.

Boy, am I glad I have a simple old fashioned key.

It seems to me that bike “keyless” is only a half hearted attempt at the game as a key is needed for certain things.

And reliability is sub-optimal.

Meanwhile, my car key lives in my pocket and I can enter, start, stop, exit, lock, kick the tailgate open/shut, without ever touching a key. That’s what I call “keyless”.

Thanks to Lee and wessie for the more detailed instructions. I inserted between the seat per their posts and the bike turned on just fine. I will still get a duplicate steel key made in case the fob gets left behind somewhere and I need to get into the side cases. I don't want to mess with a broken plastic key lodged inside the lock.

I was told by the dealer to hold the key on the indent under the rear guard and it works but a bit of a stretch to hold and reach the starter

The tech duly found the problem... my bike has an auxiliary fusebox (Fuzeblock) fitted below the seat, immediately behind the immobiliser antenna, and by demounting components and moving them around, he demonstrated that it was interference from the fusebox or its cabling that was causing the key not to work.
