Why can't it simply be the 'right tyre' ??

OK! .... so I've just picked up my third puncture (in new ish' tyres) this year which is getting pretty bloody expensive! The latest is in a hardly used rear Metzeler Roadtec 01 (180/55 ZR17) I want to replace it with the same ...assuming it can't be repaired (which is another can you/can't you saga in itself!!) But with regards to a new one I am asked, do I want a standard one or a HWM one? .... How do I know? ....Lots of information everywhere except for the obvious .... Is my bike a 'heavier weight' motorcycle or not???????......... Any thoughts or experience? Thanks.... |

Not sure there is a definitive answer, but I'd say "no, the RS isn't a heavyweight". RT, maybe. K1600GT definitely. |

Strangely, for the R1200GS Adventure 2016 (which weighs in at 260kg) they recommend the standard Roadtec 01's, but for the R1200R 2015 (which weighs in at 220kg) they recommend the HWM version. A couple of weeks ago my Zero's Pirelli Diablo Rosso II rear tire, which typically would only loose about one pound of air pressure every two weeks, started loosing two pounds a day. I looked carefully over the entire tire and could not find anything penetrating the tire tread. So, being at a loss how to repair the tire, I dumped in 8 ounces of Slime goo (the first time I have ever used this stuff) and it completely cured the air pressure drop. The tire is back to holding air pressure like new again.

It turned out I had a very small puncture - a piece of metal about the same diameter as a paper stable, right in the middle of the tread. It only became visible when the tyre was fully wetted up and then the tiny bubble could be seen. I bet when you change the tyre out, you will find something on the inside.
