hi and welcome to the mad house,

I was looking for a good fun bike for me and a good two-up bike as my wife had got into coming out and so we needed a suitable too for the job.

I was ideally looking for something that would replace my F800ST commuter and also my Aprilia Tuono, we rode everything, all the Adventure bikes and to be honest my wife loved the elevated pillion seat height but I didn't like the lack of feel from the front and general not so planted feel. We got on the RS and I stopped half way around the test route and said "this is it" and it was.

The dealer did me a great deal on a new in-stock RS and I took it, I still have the F800 and the Tuono as there is nothing cheaper to run than an F800 and I don't cry when it gets filthy at this time of year and although the RS has a good sporty side a heavy, 125bhp boxer will never run with modern sportsbike (given equal rider skills) but it's sure good fun trying.

I've just got back from 350 miles today on mine and I love, it can be a relaxed cruiser (long speed limis on motorways) or it can pick up it's skirt and hussle, it's a great do most of it very well indeed motorbike.

Growning old is compulsory, growing up is optional

Yes I thought asking the question on an RS forum would result in slightly biased opinions...

I've had my eye on a R1200GS Rally with the reduced height suspension and it's very nice indeed. I've also ridden a standard bike with the lower seat and enjoyed it, though the slightly lower bike would help. I've also ridden the RS for few hours and again really enjoyed that too.

Usage would be a real mix of highway and likely whole days in the saddle.

I think my dilemma is the TFT screen, LED lights etc. of the GS over the RS (really not keen on the dash). The idea a new RS with TFT etc. may just be around the corner makes me question whether to buy now or wait. Buying an RS now would mean saving £4000 over the cost of a GS, now that's a lot of extra money for something which isn't going to offer much more if at all. If I wait for a new model RS that difference would likely reduce to £2000. I just wish BMW would announce their plans very soon...

A real first world problem ehh!

Not sure these criteria ever get near the top of my bike buying rationalisations.

I would prefer a dash with a proper rev counter dial rather than the speedo. Digital speedo & fuel gauge are essential which we have and the other stuff is nice to have. Changing mode & suspension is easy.

Lights: they are rarely on as the LED daytime running light is lit most of the time as I rarely ride in the dark, other than commuting mostly on lit, urban roads.

In terms of waiting for the updated model. There will always be an updated model in the pipeline. Personally, I would prefer a well established model rather than be a first adopter of new technology. Let others do the beta testing.

Can't you find something more important about the RS to rationalise about?

Having ridden both (a week apart) I've come to the conclusion the engine in the GS wasn't a smooth. Does that sound right, not that's it's a big issue?

I guess the jury is still out regarding the RS v GS question, I'll let you know what I decide but currently very much leaning to the RS.

It's the same motor, as in, identical. RS is geared slightly taller.

I ride 2016 R1200RS, 2018 R1200GSA, 2016 Honda PCX150
my wife rides 2016 R1200RS, 2015 Honda PCX150
