Last week I bought two cheap and thin (1" thick) Chinese bathroom scales for $15 each from Amazon to satisfy my curiosity about what my bikes weigh.

Ever since I bought my RS, I have felt that it feels much heavier when pushing it around my garage, compared with my other five motorcycles. BMW claims the RS weighs 520 pounds, but I am sure that weight is a factory stripper, which is impossible to buy, at least here in the U.S., as we all know. All of the RS models sent to the US are loaded with every factory option that BMW can stuff on the bikes, for an additional $4000 over the base price. Anyway, my RS, which is completely stock except for the usual factory options (ESA, luggage rack, etc.) weighed in at 552 pounds, with a full tank of gas, two SHAD hard bag mounts without luggage and a lightweight lithium battery replacing the stock battery.

It weighed just about what I expected from pushing that sucker around. However, what I found really interesting is that the weight on both wheels was exactly 276 pounds. So a 50/50 weight bias. I didn't really expect that, especially after I weighed my other (and lighter) motorcycles. Here are the results weighing those motorcycles' front and rear wheels.

2011 Royal Enfield 500 Bullet: front: 190 pounds, rear: 228 pounds = 418 pounds
2018 Zero electric motorcycle with all of the batteries that will fit in the chassis: front: 266 pounds, rear: 203 pounds = 469 pounds
2009 BMW F650GS twin: front 220 pounds, rear: 266 pounds = 486 pounds
2002 Yamaha FZ1: front: 249 pounds, rear: 268 pounds = 517 pounds (It feels a lot lighter than that when pushing it around)
2005 Triumph Bonneville T-100: front: 247 pounds, rear: 283 pounds = 530 pounds

It’s not impossible to by a base bike in the US, I have one. They are pretty rare though. It would be interesting to put mine on a scale. I’d guess most of the weight I’ve added would be from the center stand, bag mounts and rear rack. I would think the ESA, whizz wheel, gps mounts etc wouldn’t add up to much. I don’t have any complaints on the weight though, it’s supposedly 40 pounds lighter than my K1300s was.

I’m almost more surprised that your FZ-1 is that light. Pretty good really.

have you considered using it more constructively such as volunteering in a soup kitchen?

Interesting! It's heavier than I thought; I thought around 530. I was most surprised that the Bonneville weighed as much as it does. It seems incredibly heavy for a twin. I always thought of British twins as being fairly light - my Norton 850 Commando is under 430 wet. OF course, there is no ABS, water cooling, OR electric start! ;)

I come from a Kawasaki GTR1400 (Concours 14) named "Thunder nugget", so my R1200RS "Brunhilde" feels like a nimble ballerina whatever the scale shows.
She's not fat, just "tightly packed".

Why did you buy two scales?

For those of you who think I should be spending time in a soup kitchen, instead of weighing motorcycles - or spending time posting on this forum, I have the following response:

My feeling is that weight on a motorcycle is just as important as power and you know how many motorcycle owners like to dyno the power curves of their bikes. Putting a motorcycle on a dyno is a lot more time-consuming and expensive than weighing it on a couple of cheap bathroom scales. I weighed all six of my motorcycles in about 15 minutes and it cost me $30. Plus, I still have a couple of new digital bathroom scales that I can use in each of my two bathrooms. You can't say that about a dynamometer.

Put mine on a weigh bridge while on holiday in France and it was 240 kg.

You need to weigh the bike with both wheels sitting on each scale. Otherwise I believe you will get incorrect results as some of the bike's weight will be supported by the other wheel that is on the ground.
