RE: How many motorcycles? - 2

My problem is that I hate cars as you can tell by my current car, a 25-year old Saturn station wagon, which has outlasted the company that made it. I am fortunate that I live in a temperate climate and only have to deal with coastal fog during the summer and occasional rain during the winter. Temperatures here rarely get below 40 degrees in the morning during the winter or 75 degrees during the summer. Motorcycles are just a lot more fun to ride than a car is to drive - at least for me.

Wessie made a good point about heat from the engine. In Australia it's especially relevant! I remember some years ago I was riding a rental KTM 900 explorer in Italy. OK on the Autostrada but in the city the front mounted cooling fans blew hot air directly onto my legs. It became unbearable!

When purchasing a new bike I would consider very carefully this aspect. No problem with my boxer R1200RS but an alternative....A Guzzi however...

Not sure if the first one counts as an actual motorcycle. I had turned 18 and was just getting ready to ask parents to agree with me getting a 125cc bike with L plates. Then my uncle turns up with a Puch Maxi in the back of his Volvo. He had "tuned" it

Just as important - the one's you never got 'at the time' - hence the Yamaha FS1E club etc
Mine would be Yamaha RD350/RD400 air cooled RD500 4cyl 2 stroke & XS850 with Vetter boxes and top box, maybe the colour matched trailer(sorry - nostalgia) - saw the advert in a usa magazine, never seen the bike.
Early Suzuki kettle 750 and their 500cc two stroke twin of the same era
1970 Honda 90 - the 110cc 'powerful' model and their 125cc 4stroke twin and obviously the CBX 6 cylinder or Benelli 750 sei also 6 cylinders.
And finally a Bridgestone 350 - mate had one after his RD160/180 can't remember but it was better than my 125!
History makes them better than they were, our current RS, all versions, are safer, faster, reliable with better brakes the tyres allow you to use.

1971 – Got my first licence at 16 and rode my sister’s Raleigh Wisp (1967) moped on L plates.

1974 – First bike a Honda CD175 (1972) - a poor student. Passed my test the easy way. Wife-to-be often on pillion.

1975 – moved up to a Honda CB250 (1973)

1975 - silly move to a new Honda CB200 ‘cos I was flush in a good summer job.

1976 – Yamaha RD350 (1973) – almost fell off the back when I opened the throttle on the way home.

Then marriage, work and children got in the way for a while.

Short term commuter bikes – MZ TS150 and a Suzuki TS125.

1982 won a Mini (cash alternative) in a works raffle and bought a BMW R75/5 (1973) for £500, encouraged by a Norton Commando owner who moved in above me. Enjoyed a Big Bike for the first time. Didn’t travel far in those days. Stripped it and refurbished it in 1986, but it had to go with a growing family and a wife looking for a wee car.

Took older son kart racing through the 90s then got back on a bike when we sold off all the karting gear.

2001 – Yellow Ducati 748 (1999)

2004 – BMW R1100S (1999) eBay purchase

2003 - Peugeot Speedfight 100cc scooter (1999) for commuting

2003 – Suzuki Hayabusa (1999) – rode it home from Wales plus a weekend of fun before I removed the engine to use in a Westfield sports car (Junior’s apprentice project). Sold the rolling chassis.

2003 – Yellow Triumph Daytona 955 (2000) – another eBay purchase. Mint, low miles with very noisy triple pipe outlet can under seat. Older son took it on after passing his bike test. Not a bad1st bike.

2007 – Buell XB12 (2006) – another eBay purchase – a demo that had been dropped so a couple of marks on RHS. That was fun.

2007 – a demo ride on a GS convinced me it was a comfortable bike that would let me go places. Including track sessions. Traded in the Buell for a 2006 GS.

2011 – Couldn’t resist a shiny Aprilia Mille RSV (2007), but it let me down very quickly. Stranded with burned out electrics. Common problem. Quickly sold after repair.

2013 – Sold GS on GS forum.

2014 – R1200R Anniversary (2013) lovely bike. Was to last a long time, but things changed.

2015 - BMW R1100S (2004) Boxer Cup – what a lovely bike. Mint. Wish I’d kept it.

2015 – R1200RS launched. Retirement year. I ordered one early without seeing or test riding. It arrived in June and I still have it. 45K miles and still enjoy it, having “sorted” it to suit me. 7 Euro trips and one more booked.

2017 – BMW R80/100 café racer (1978). Lovely build, but wish I hadn’t, because the flywheel fell off on my third ride. Engine repair cost me a fortune and I still haven’t put it all back together. I hate it.

That’s only 19 bikes 😊

My first bike that I rode solo, was by the family, a 1952 125 Harley Davidson war reparations model identical to the DKW 125. This bike had been my step Dads when he was a kid in Nebraska ... I had to be lifted on the bike. This was 1967 ...

Next was a orange lawn mower Brigs and stratton engined mini bike. which passed down to my brother ....

Next by the family, was honda 50 mini-trail, My step dad sold both the mini-bikes as he didn't like the fact that me and my brother were treating them rough just like he treated his lol ..... A very good fellow though ....

Next bike was by me, a suzuki 80 box frame with an expansion chamber .... it had a bad coil i think but would start if you pushed it down a hill lol ...

Next was a 1973 Kawasaki 175, by me in 1974. a state of the art racing machine in the day until the Can-Ams came out around 1975. I raced it in motocross, TT dirt style and at least one cross country ... Had it street legal and my step dad raced it in cross country as well. traded for a willys jeep later on ... I was thirteen and I had to race in the mens classes as the boys bikes were limited to 110ccs if I remember right.

Next was a purple/cream Yamaha CS-200 twin with stock pipes ..... totaled in 1977 on the way to my girlfriend house .... They towed the car I hit as well ...

Next was a 1974 RD 350 with chrome expansion chambers by me within a week of the demise of the 200 .... Traded in on the next bike .

Next was a new 1978 XT 500 This bike was much loved and completely used up at the end. ... think thousands of gear shifting wheelies .... rode it to Mexico once down to the end of the pavement in Baja ... Ran in a hill climb at Sturgis SD and one at Casper WY where I got 7th out of about 30 open class motocrossers with it street legal, with a really bad spot imo , I won in the level and length of horn honks by the crowd lol .... I rode the bike down after I caught it .... as the spotters all ran LOL ... WFO ...

Next in 1984 was the 1973 1/2 BMW R60/5 which is still in the stable .... long story, was my step dads bike, given to me from the estate, later resto-mod'ed to a 900 .... many stories.

Next in 1986 was my "real" Dads 1978 XT500 which he had bought new and kept all along ... Ended up getting a DUI and high speed supermoto chase across town ... long story ... sold to keep out of trouble ... also was spoiled by the BMW and it's windjammer fairing ... no more naked bikes unless a dirt bike for the dirt ...

Next was a 1979 BMW R100RT and a older /5 for parts ... Only rode the 79 once or twice and then sold in the late nineties ....

Then in 22 I ordered a BMW R1250RS with about every option, all the packages, Wheels, 719 options, panniers and top box and some more upgrades after it came in ....A splendid machine indeed ... retirement project ...

About a third as many as I would like to have owned!!

I’m not certain that I can remember them all. About 40 though.

I am very much a latecomer to the party compared to most on here! I didn't take up riding until 2013, finally had the time to scratch the itch which had been nagging away for a couple of years at that point.

2013 - Honda CBF125 after passing my CBT to use whilst training for the full test which was passed in Jan 2014. (I knew biking was the future as soon as I enjoyed the 125cc bike ahead of the Audi S3, now a Ford Focus is all I need).

2014 - Yamaha Fazer8 - In January as soon as I passed my test upgraded to the Yamaha, lovely looking bike, white, black engine and hardware with gold wheels.

2015 - Ducati Multistrada - bought late summer 2015, was in the dealer with problems more than it was on the road, an absolute lemon. Rejected within 6 months and bought back by the dealer. (It was bought new, the first and last time buying a new bike).

2016 - BMW R1200GS - great bike did first overseas bike tour to Spain, But found it a bit too boring.

2017 - BMW S1000XR - this hit the sweet spot, owned it for 5 years.

2022 - BMW R1250RS - after starting to get a bit tired of the XR shouting at me to go faster the whole time, was looking for a twin and actually overlooked the RS until I stumbled on a thread on the XR forum about it purchased in May that year, felt the engine was a step forward on the 1200, as was the quick shifter. Had it nearly 2 years and can see me hanging on to it for a long time.

Very happy with the RS and cannot think of anything that would make me want to change. Been curious about a KTM 1290SAS, but always put off by reliability and dealer rep (don't want a repeat of the Multi experience) so never actually ridden one, will probably test ride a R1300GS at some point i.e. when the RS is in the dealer for a service, but not looking to buy one.
