went for a ride today and parked up next to another 1250RS I noticed that it had Road 6 tyres fitted and asked the guy if he thought they were any good when I noticed the rear was a 190/50/17 rather than a 180 ? when I asked he said that was the only one the tyre shop had in stock and told him that it would be fine
is this correct can a 190 be fitted to the rear of a 1250RS ???

Did you happen to notice what the swingarm (driveshaft) clearance was like? That would be the main concern I guess. You can bet BMW would not recommend a 190.

Usually with wider tims to keep the clearance reasonable.

Interesting experience while on tour in Europe a few weeks ago:

Four of us were riding the B500 through the Black Forest, and having received some 'signals' from oncoming bikers we were definitely riding at the requisite 50 km/hr when we rounded what would otherwise have been a glorious high-speed bend and were pulled over by the Polizei for a routine check. We had to produce all our documents, obviously, and we were then questioned specifically as to whether our bikes had been modified at all (to which obviously the answer was 'no, not at all').

The relevance of this little anecdote is that the cops were particularly interested in the size of our tyres, and whether we were running what the manufacturers specified. And notably, apparently the German version of the vehicle logbook includes what size of tyre the vehicle should be fitted with; and they don't understand why the British omit this important info from the document. (I don't know who the outliers are on that subject, the Brits or the Germans?)

Do the cops have the relevant technical data with them to check if you�re telling the truth? Wouldn�t know where to start with my bike as not only tyres midi but wheel size also modified,probably best to keep away from popular biker haunts with officious situations like this happening.

One of my riding pals ordered a tire online and got a 190 shipped instead of the 180 he thought he ordered. He installed it and as far as I know had no issues throughout the life of that tire. I would suspect that it would slow down the initial turn in while cornering. That is what I noticed on my Ducati 900SS/SP. It came with a 170 tire mounted on a 5.5" wheel. I put a 180 on at the first tire change because of that wheel. Went back to the 170 after that. The almost 100 lbs. lighter Ducati might have been more sensitive to the change than our RS's.

Seen other reports of european police impounding bikes with 'not for road use' loud exhausts! (no sympathy from me)
You cannot move the bike, trailer/van needed to remove and then a 're-produce to prove road worthy withing specification, pay fine and a new test fee.
It does seem excessive if you are just 'passing through and area' but add a few hundred others popping and banging it would test the locals tolerance.
If you live on one of 'those routes' plagued with weekend warriors I expect they are responding to a need, maybe accident black-spots?.
I would guess 99% of those Triumph/Harley non road use screaming pidgeon 'extra add-ons' could cause some issues.
Too easy to give the insurance company was way out, as per policy declaration, regarding non declared modifications.
Noisey exhaust should not be a way out but pretty sure a tyre 'not as specified' would certainly help the refuse a claim initially.
Not worth the trouble trying to prove it had no impact on any accident.

I would doubt it very much. In our case, they took away all our paperwork to a roadside cabin while they did whatever they needed to, and then bid us all good luck and farewell. But then again, we were four middle-aged old farts on touring bikes, paperwork all in order, not speeding, and without noisy exhausts, so I don't think we exactly piqued their interest.

That's supposedly the width of the tyre in mm, so 1 cm (or about 5.4%) wider does it make much difference?

...but with the beads constrained by the narrower rim designed for the 180, the side wall will hang out a little further from the rim and the top of the tire will be a little higher.... Seems to me I saw a website where I could put in tire dimension and rim dimensions to create a rough image of how the tire would sit, but now can't find the site.
