I had the pleasure of meeting a group of engineering school graduates from the former Yugoslav countries in the early 00s. These young people had seen the war as children and could speak of the horrors of neighbor vs neighbor attacks. With all that, they still had the courage and faith in life to attend college and work towards a professional career. They impressed me.

Multi-generational homes were the norm throughout much of history…several generations working together to have a good quality of life. Generally, only those who had to move away did. Others got jobs near home and became contributing members of the household. People worked until they died or could no longer work…relying on children and grandchildren to pick up the slack in their declining years. Much of what we expect (in the USA) originated from the aftermath of WWII…not even 100 years ago. I’m a Notary Public. RESPECT MY AUTHORITY! |

I know there is a pinned post somewhere saying not to mention Brexit, but no question on the economy in 2023 (for the UK) cannot be considered without mentioning the B word. The UK has the same economic problems as other economies in Europe, US, Canada and elsewhere - Covid hangover problems and Russia's war on Ukraine, and the problems they have caused in supply chains and inflation etc. However, in the UK we have a unique problem which makes everything just that 'little' bit worse. At the same time, our government decided to throw up trade barriers with our biggest and closest market. This has also had a negative effect on labour availability. Tax receipts are massively down, which resulted in government taking gambles with the economy (a misguided attempt to 'take back control', the only alleged benefit of Brexit). It has also created major political instability for a country that was once sane compared to most. It does mean Britain uniquely has one option open to it to improve the situation e.g. join the single market and/or customs union, but political parties are afraid to talk about it for fear of offending the lunatic fringe of their voters and parties. It's a long way back for the UK from the mess it's in, meanwhile the govt bangs on about refugees and illegal immigrants. |

We are far enough along the track to see some of the impact on the economy and labour market, and the unresolved challenges that remain such as the Northern Ireland situation, a US trade deal and harmony with the EU. Our new prime minister seems to remain very quiet on these subjects and after his most recent Vox pop with the homeless person, I think he might go back to wearing his invisibility cloak.

We are all affected globally whether it is by corruption or incompetence. A good example could be Onasis, although his worlds biggest shipping fleet no longer exists. |

But if you disregard the % and check how much net does it affect you... unless you are in the position where ~100EUR a month is a critical condition for surviving most won't notice or be massively affected. Unfortunately here the most affected are pensioners and those still working but being financially irresponsible. I've seen too many people making decent wages but loan installments alone surpassing 50% of their monthly salary just because buying a 'used' car or a 'normal' apartment was beneath them when it comes to perceived status. As for housing I can related with some other comments about the culture of turnover, people expecting to buy at x and flip at x+1. It would only go so far as people are willing to pay, and that is a bubble that will at some point burst on its own and I would hate to be someone paying 4000€/m2 when the price comes down to realistic 2500€/m2 in a country where median yearly income is sub 20k EUR.

Speaking of homes: I live in the SF Bay Area and home prices have been crazy here during the past few years. I bought my home in 1978 for $101K. Earlier this year homes, before mortgage rates took off, were were selling for around $1.5 million within a week after being put on the market, with many offers $100K or more over the asking price. All of a sudden sales have slumped likely due to it being the slow time of the year and to rising mortgage rates, but owners do not seem to want to bargain and are sticking to the asking price for their homes. The latest trend is when they don't get the offer that they want, they pull the home off of the market and then list them for lease. A few of months ago a neighbor two doors down from me offered their relatively small home (two-story, 3 bedrooms, 2 bath, two car garage, 1400sf) for $4,500 a month. After no takers, this month they dropped the lease price to $4,200, which seems to be the current asking prices for similar or larger homes in my part of Pacifica. Still no takers, but it could be that this is not a good time for families to move from one home to another. In any case, I have no idea how young working families can possibly afford a mortgage to buy a home or even to lease one in this area. Likely that is one reason (plus our crazy high taxes) why the state is slowly seeing its population move elsewhere, such as to Texas and the Southwest. Eventually, market forces will win out.

For most of America, slumlord is a very profitable profession and very few places have zoning codes. In addition, the condition of the property doesn't really reflect its tax value. That's determined by the area-under-roof and lot size. Thus, most municipal governments are dominated by landlords or people willing to carry their message. So, move out of town when these guys take-over.

Although I have detected more inertia to riding compared to winter in previous years. I guess it has been colder, wetter and windier this month compared to the last few years. That must be a factor but so is the cost of fuel and the cost of the fish & chips I used as an incentive to get out. I should just forego a bottle of white Burgundy or claret which would cover the cost but once a middle class alcoholic one has standards to keep
