I've been considering replacing the bars with the R bike bar, supposed to be an easy swap and get you into a more upright position.

Recommendations for where to purchase said bar and is there anything else I need to purchase to have the mechanic do the swap? I think I'll need a new set of risers as well.

The R bars are a bit closer, higher and wider.
I think you will need the bars, the bar ends, the upper clamps and possibly the clamp bolts.
Trouble is it's all expensive when bought across the BMW service counter.

I think Wunderlich take their pricing model from BMW so theirs is also expensive, just a bit less so.

I might go with this, already have risers on the bike, not sure if there's still enough cabling to add this

I just switched my bars over to the R bars with the R Heli risers. Love it. Completed a 7700km ride over 13 days including one day of 1016km in one shot. No more shoulder pain.
There is just barely enough cable if you undo a few of the tie wraps that keep it bundled up neatly. I will probably change my clutch cable just to give me a bit more free play.

It was not cheap either. You will need to order the bars, top clamps, the appropriate risers for the R bars and then you will have to choose to either get the R bar ends or drill the RS bar ends to fit. The RS uses M8 bolts and the R bars use M10, f*ck you very much BMW. All in I was around $550 Canadian dollars. My dealer quoted me $750 to do it so screw that. I ordered the parts online from the cheapest places I could find at the time. I also chose to drill out my RS bar ends instead of purchasing the R ones and purchased the M10 bolts I needed locally.

Tool wise you will need metric allen keys to remove the bar ends and Torx bits to remove the bars themselves if I remember correctly. You will also need a T8 screw driver to remove the set screws buried in the grips. DO NOT TRY TO SEPERATE THE LEFT SIDE GRIP WITH THE WUNDERWHEEL. Peel the grip back at the wheel end and there is a small screw to remove that will let you slide the entire left grip off as a whole. The right side is similar, but you will have to split the controller to remove it, there is an extra screw on the forward side of the controller you will need to remove.

Yes do it it makes the bike much better suited to long days in the saddle and the extra benefit of the bike being seemingly easier to throw around

I have had a disc removed in my back with a fusion and one shoulder rotator fixed and am now on a LOOONNNGGG waiting list for my second shoulder surgery

I can now ride all day easily with next to no pain in the shoulder and my knackered right hip

I went with a Wunderlich conversion kit as it was a one stop shop and getting stock from BMW New Zealand is just slow and painful
It came with everything I needed except the tools to do the job

It is a pretty simple job just take your time and protect all your panels and tank with towels / blankets etc

For those that have done the conversion, a couple of questions.

- Did you have regular bar risers before and how big an improvement was this?
- Do the bars hit the mirrors at all at full lock?

With the factory bars I had the Helibar risers. It was an improvement over stock, but still left me with pain between my shoulder blades after 3-4 hours. With the new 1200R Helibar risers and the new 1200R bars I can ride 10 hours no problem.
As for hitting the mirrors, I have Barkbuster Storm guards on my bike and it only took a minor tweaking to stop them from hitting the mirrors.
