Now they're sending out Gritters, spreading salt, against the hot tarmac!!

Just seen the News/Cobra update as it's 'hot' and their update is that the gritters will be deployed to spread salt over UK roads.

It helps!/? with the tar road surface to cope with the expected near 40 degrees C and melting tarmac.

Just when you thought 'winter is over/no more salty roads' and IF you go for a ride, please also 'save water' and do not wash your vehicles?

If using the same kind of salts/industrial waste that we do in Missouri, this kind of year-round salting has to be hard on any metal infrastructure....

That said - I seem to recall reading a couple years ago that most British municipalities use crushed rock dust to grit the roads in summer.

I'm lost on the idea here, each summer going above 35C is locally the norm and actual tarmac/concrete baking in the sun will easily reach 40C ambient even if the official measurement in the shade at 2m from the ground is less - but effect on tarmac?

Heat can only make it slightly more viscous which just makes it more malleable and prone to tire trails developing under heavy vehicles such as buses or trucks - it makes absolutely no difference for motorcycles and I've ridden above 40C. Basically poured some bottled water into my helmet at some point and tucked away all but a t-shirt but you can.

No idea how salt will do anything.

I heard on the news this morning that the forecast was that London might see 40 degrees C. on Monday and Tuesday. Talk about a hot time in the old town! I am not sure what pouring salt on really hot pavement is going to do. Likely nothing good.

I believe they are spreading grit and powdered stone to soak up melting tar. So no need to worry about salt corrosion, but deposits of gritty tar could be difficult to remove.

We had this discussion in another place. Apparently, you Mediterranean types use a different blend for your tarmac, with a higher melting point.

As for using salt, it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere and the subsequent evaporation cools the asphalt.

In the UK, we are more likely to used crushed rock. In the Cotswolds, this is on the roads all year, anyway, due to the number of quarries around the place. Our roads are beige not black.
