Hello all, excited to be joining the forum. Found this forum as a result of researching a new BMW. Looking between the R1250RS (likely choice) and the R1250GS. Have owned various sport bikes over the years (CBR1000RR, Triumph 1050 Speed Triple, VFR, SuperHawk 996 (wish I still had that one), couple of Harleys, etc. I currently have a 2019 Yamaha XSR900 (will keep it as it's fantastic in the curves), however, having recently retired, I'm looking at doing more long distance sport touring and the RS seems to check all the boxes. Always owned in-line 4, triple or v-twins and never a boxer. Have read lot's of reviews on the BMW boxer engine and while most are very positive, do see comments about the uninspiring exhaust note and the engine/transmission feeling "clunky"?

Looking at the new 2022 RS and getting ready to go test ride one as well as the GS. From what I've researched, the RS is a bit more sport biased, (which is what I'm looking for), would appreciate hearing from owners as to how well it performs both at touring duties and shorter (unladen) runs through the curves?

Welcome. I had to look up Superhawk as we called it Firestorm. Nice bike, I rode one when they first came out but went with a 1999 CBR600 which was probably my least favoured bike I have owned.

The RS will do everything you have described but we are all biased here. The RS is probably the closest thing to a VFR on the market, a sport tourer with a torquey engine not a revvy inline 4 like the Ninja and new Suzuki 1000GT. The engine characteristics make it very rideable on the Alpine roads we have as well as a relaxed tourer if you are sitting at 80mph using cruise control.

As for the engine note. Not something I have ever worried about and if that is a gamechanger for you, I would question your priorities!

Welcome to the forum.
Both me and my wife had in-line BMWs for 28 years before changing to the R1200RS and now the R1250RS.
Made the switch to have easier service and both of us were a little nervous to give up the in-line engine.
Because of the good mid range power both of us have been happy with the power.
I still think it sounds a little funny :)
We use our bikes for Sport Touring and are happy with the comfort on long days and it handles well in the curves. Our K bikes were S and RS so we were used to that type of bike.

Thanks guys for your feedback on the new RS, going to have to go ride one this coming week...and likely take the checkbook with me ;)

P.S. Lee, like that white with the red frame tubing, will be either that or the blue for me!

If you liked the superhawk 996 punch, then you will love the boxer's pull. I have a viffer and a 996 Suzuki sv.. but the 1200 RS has won me over for the refinement, comnfort, and flatout sneaky performance.. the low Center of G and the balance and suspension is sublime.. the tranny is fine... to me the reports of clunkiness are over exagerrations.. the luggage works great and is very practical, and when riding w/o the cases the mounts are less visually obtrusive than the ones on my viffer... the BMW is kinda quiet, but i suppose that could be easily remedied if one were so inclined... i kinda like being able to quietly leave a campground...

Im guessing you will like it... FWIW...
