So I know that GS stands for "Gelände/Straße" (meaning off-road/on-road) and ST apparently stands for "Straße/strada" (fairly obviously Street) what does "RS" stand for?

During the pre-war years, BMW campaigned some supercharged boxers and called them “Rennsports,” which means Race Sports. Back in the day, the “schnellstes motorrad der welt” title went to both BMW and DKW. It was DKW who unseated BMW for the motorcycle speed record. However, it was George Meier’s 1939 win at the Isle of Man on an RS500 that seemed to change racing rules. It was the first win at the island by a non-British rider.
