Renewing your footpeg rubber: Yes! You can re-rivet the rubber just like factory, but Baby, rivets can be no joke! Some tips...

Quick prologue:

My left footpeg rubber has been torn for what seems thousands of miles. My 2016 has just under 10K miles, and I had brought this up with my dealer last fall during an 8K service (my first) just before the 3 year "bumper to bumper" expired. They denied it; the young service manager was as gracious as he could be about it. I don't think he's there anymore. This dealer is really starting to epitomize local bums monopolizing the Beemer and euro bike market and being concomitantly difficult to deal with- sleazy, evasive, etc.
Anyhow, I bought a new footpeg rubber from them right at that service, so it's been sitting shelved nearly a year.
I dug in yesterday. I have the electronic official Motorad Dealer Service Manual. I saw that the instructions for "renewing" the footrest pad called for a new threaded metal retaining plate and new screws. You're to get new parts to put it back together. You have to drill out the factory rivets. I learned a lot about rivets and handling them.
I called the dealer service yesterday (Saturday) to ask for some clarification. Do they opt for the new retaining plate or will they rivet. I was thinking of the option of having them complete it. Mind you, I bought the bike new from them and had service done there. I offered to come down and show them and be as quick as possible. "I'm not going to tie up a mechanic answering your questions, I can schedule an appointment for you, and we're 3 weeks out."

That oppositional, needlessly impertinent, recalcitrant asshole response was enough, and I decided to rivet. I wanted to ride and I didn't want to step foot in this dealer, pinned into submissive, humiliating "oh, can have the special parts please, your service manager just scolded me..mmmm..."

The Job

You CAN re-rivet the cushion just like factory. I saw that some people are buying Chinese-made whole footpeg and cushions to avert the hassle and cost of new genuine Beemer assemblies. I guess that's an option.
But, if like me, you have the new cushion, here are some tips to rivet it back on.

1) Rivets are tough. Just drilling out the old ones will teach you a lot. Do a search for blind pop rivets and rivet removal, and you will see videos of drilling. I used a 7/64" bit. It takes a while, but you can feel it sink into the rivet body, cutting up the mandrel and then it will release.

2) Don't be afraid if you screw it up and have to redo the new rivets. Yes, you probably could get one side to hold and then the other is loose. It takes practice. What makes this difficult and probably, I'm guessing, why the manual and service procedure eschews rivets for screws instead, is that the surfaces are recessed. You have to get the caphead on the rivet body pressed flush with the recessed surface on the bottom of the footpeg (see pic), and then you press the rivet tool tight against the top of the caphead in order to drive the soft mandrel shaft part through. I devised a trick. More on this in the next tip. I had a lot of take-a-parts, redoes and redrills. It sucked. But I am ready for the next rubber failure as drilling out and riveting is a known quantity now.

3) I bought a nice FastenPro rivet tool from Harbor Freight. What caused a lot of redoes was that I just was not getting the caphead to stay flush on the surface while I drove the “pin”, “the mandrel” with this tool. You need to put some sort of spacer in the recessed hole that you can then press the tool's chuck head into while you're squeezing the tool to drive the rivet. This will keep the rivet body and caphead down and tight against the bottom cast aluminum peg surface (inside the recessed hole). I used machine hex nuts from a set of 6-32 x 3/8” machine screws and nuts. And I stacked them. 2 on top of each other for the inside hole closer to the bike. And 3 stacked for the angled-offset outside hole. Plus I unscrewed the “pavement tickler” nipple-nub near the outside hole to get more clearance. See pics.

4) Use longer, ½” long, but 1/8” diameter aluminum rivets. Home Depot has them.

5) The hex nuts as spacers are huge! Have those and use this tool plus the Arrow 1/8” by ½” rivets and press it all into a sturdy table and you’re done! Unlikely you will have redoes and redrills. But stick with it anyhow!

I love guys who know how to save money, and I've worn out my share of riveters in the last 50 years. You have my respect.

The pegs are crap for a sport tourer. The first time I had my bike detailed (those who know my bike are snickering - but it's true), the rubber tubing started slipping around. I use the pegs a lot, and hate to have that squishy feeling of an unstable platform.

Since I wear rubber soled boots (and shoes and even sandals) when riding, I never understood the purpose of the rubber. Maybe if I was barefoot it would make sense....

Had same experience with left rear footpeg on my previous R1200RS. Probably when my wife goes on and off there is a lot of twist on the rubber of the left rear footpeg. Went for PUIG black metal footpegs (on all four), and probably will move them over to my R1250RS when I'm in the mood for it.

I don't know. Good question. I thought the metal peg body was cast aluminum, but to be honest HD had the longer 1/8" rivets in stock 4 miles away and I went for them and didn't think much about it.
I wanted to get this done. The Harbor freight tool had a selection of shorter rivets in the set, and I had already bungled a few of those and had to drill them back out. This was an Archimedes "Eureka" affair where I almost thought I'd be going back to the dealer defeated. But the hex-nut spacers saved the day.
I've seen galvanic corrosion with bi-metals on a garden hose with aluminum couplers. It frozen to the brass water outlet fixture on the house. Couldn't get it off with pipe wrenches, and it broke the solder inside off the copper pipe.

WHOOPS! I just reread the arrow rivet box. Looks like they're steel. Maybe I'll look for aluminum ones. Depends on hard to find, I guess.
The procedure by now is nothing.

Maybe I'm safe with steel rivets in aluminum. Just found this.
They're probably carbon steel rivets, so maybe just they'll corrode.

Yes, any corrosion will happen on the carbon steel rivets, though the red-oxide may stain that aluminium superficially. Nothing to worry about.

My '05 R1200ST used the exact same footpegs as our R1200RS. At that time the metal plate that secured the rubber was held by two short screws. I've checked and those parts are no longer available.

Forgot yesterday to add photo of the Puig footpegs.
AS said, they will most likely be installed on my R1250RS as I swapped back to the original when I replaced with the R1250RS.

I epoxied anodised aluminium M3 nuts into the flange that sits in the footpad and then thread locked 10mm bolts in.

noticed my left one is wobbly. Assumed Id find new ones or replace the rivets. Id like to keep with rubber pegs I Havent looked REAL closely... maybe I should.

1150 pegs lasted 10 yrs no wobbliness. Guess I didnt know it was a thing with these. good options in this thread.

The BMW Option 719 HP ones (77252462962) are supplied without any rubber...
