A real shame for those of us who tinkers with B&S engines in go carts, home made buggeys, lawn mowers etc.

It has long been suffering from the land slide to buy cheaper off shore power....likely did it to slow themselves.

Private quitity will do what they do best. Buy it for pennys on the dollar, restructure to separate real assets, sell or borrow on them, take the cash and run and leave the smoking ruins to any still holding credit. They will NOT build a New B&S!

Took with it Snapper and Simplicity, two brands trying to be more than Big Box store MTD stuff. I guess Kubota is the remaining option.

The first engine I tinkered with was a B&S powered Flymo hover mower c.1970.

Ryobi & Honda seem to be the dominant players in petrol garden machinery over here, although the former is going over to electric for most stuff. McCulloch still seems to be a thing, as the Chrysler of the Husqvarna group.

Flymo! Back when I was 19, I worked at a lawn & garden shop and we worked on a few of those. What a concept!
I have a John Deere riding mower with a Kawasaki twin cylinder engine. Very smooth and reliable

Bouncing around the web, looking for any additional info on the B&S saga, I discovered that BRP (the owners of SeaDoo, SkiDoo, CanAm, Rotax, etc.) discounted the Evinrude line of outboard motors at the end of May 2020. That leaves Mercury as the last domestic in that market.

That is rather sad.

I have had numerous gardening machines with B&S engines, including a rotavator and a lawn-mower with side-valve engines. Very reliable and well enough made but not exactly cutting-edge on the technology front. Is there a Harley-Davidson parallel here?

I had a few lawn mowers over the years. All had B&S motors, and every year required a bunch of tinkering to get going for the season. I bought a Honda mower that is obviously Honda powered over a decade ago. I've added gas and changed the air filter once or twice. That's it. Starts on the first or second pull every time, even after sitting all winter. The oil is supposed to last the life of the mower according to the owner's manual. I should probably change or sharpen my blade, but it has been the most maintenance-free lawn mower I've ever used. Two of my closest friends bought Honda powered mowers (different mower brand) around the same time I did, and have had the same experience with engine reliability/maintenance as I have.
